Hidden in the alley at the intersection of Neiweilu and Gushan Road, the Black Dog Eatery is a signless little restaurant serving Singaporean cuisine. It’s not only low-key but also hard to book a table, making it a true "hidden gem" of alleyway delicacies.
Once you step inside, you’ll feel the warm yet slightly mysterious atmosphere. The black dog will happily wander around and may even sit down by your table to watch you 🐶.
📌 Signature Laksa Claypot Noodles (Shrimp/Chicken) $220
The Laksa Claypot Noodles at Black Dog is a classic dish not to be missed. The broth is rich and creamy; although the coconut milk ratio isn’t high, it’s smooth and well-blended with spices and umami. The fried noodles soak up the broth, offering a distinct texture and a wonderfully flavorful experience.
📌 Dinosaur Milo (I) $85
This drink is a "must-order" at every table! The Milo is rich but not overly sweet, with a smooth texture that pairs perfectly with the main dishes. One sip is satisfying and refreshing, instantly energizing you.
📌 Kaya Toast (with thick butter) $75
One of the soul foods of Singaporean cuisine! Black Dog’s Kaya Toast is lightly toasted for a slightly crispy exterior, filled generously with kaya spread and rich butter. The balance of savory and sweet, melting in your mouth, makes the unique aroma of kaya so enticing that you just can't stop at one bite!
Overall Evaluation
Although the prices at Black Dog Eatery are slightly on the higher side, the portions are substantial, and each dish is full of character, making it a restaurant worth visiting again and again! Whether you want to experience authentic Singaporean flavors or simply enjoy delicious food, this place will not disappoint you. Next time you find yourself near the alleys of Neiweilu and Gushan Road, remember to book in advance and personally enjoy this "Singapore in an alley"!
I came here around 1 PM on a weekday, just before 2 PM. The business was quite good, and the staff's attitude was very friendly. I also noticed that after I sat down, there was nowhere to put my bag, so they brought me a basket, which left a good impression.
I ordered the Hainan leg meat fast food. The chicken rice had a wonderful chicken oil aroma. The leg meat was incredibly tender, a little oily, but I really liked the texture and seasoning. Paired with the three-color sauce (chili sauce, ginger sauce, and dark soy sauce), it was perfect with the rice. I highly recommend the chili sauce, which has a slight sour taste and a hint of tropical flavor. I felt it balanced out the oiliness of the leg meat. The overall portion was substantial, but with the meat and rice paired like that, I finished it in no time. It's a flavor that I think about wanting to come back for occasionally.
Personally, I think the only downside is that it's a bit pricey, so I won't be coming too often.
▶ Handmade Brownie - Marshmallow $100◀
The brownie is super rich with a very solid texture, and the chocolate flavor is not overly sweet. The marshmallow on top complements it perfectly! The stretchy marshmallow and brownie have different textures! It makes you feel very happy~
▶ Classic Original Basque $120◀
Their Basque cheesecake is different from others, with a richer and heavier texture. Amazingly, it is not greasy at all, and the dense texture melts in your mouth with a hint of cheese aroma~
▶ Handmade Scone - Classic Original $90◀
The scones come in two basic flavors: original and cranberry, with weekly limited flavors. I tried the chocolate one! The original flavor with butter and strawberry jam is excellent. They use salted butter, so there's a sweet and salty interplay, and you can taste a lot of strawberry chunks in the jam~ It's fantastic!
▶ Handmade Scone - Cranberry $80◀
The cranberry scone contains many cranberry dried fruits~ The dried fruits provide a different texture, and it pairs well with jam and butter to create different layers of flavor!

Atmosphere of the Restaurant
I went there during lunchtime on a weekday.
It wasn't crowded, and there were only two or three other customers in the restaurant. The staff were foreigners, and their voices were surprisingly loud. 😅
The seating was divided into small areas, making it easy for one person to enter. However, I was unsure about starting the ordering process via the QR code, so I asked a staff member. It seemed that other customers who came later also didn't understand, as I noticed everyone asking for help. 😂
Food Evaluation
They had a set menu for Hainanese chicken rice, but I ordered it à la carte. I’m not sure how it usually is, but I was a bit surprised that the chicken was cold. However, the amount of chicken and how well-packed it was were good, and I felt full even with the single order.
I also chose the yellow rice, which had a strong flavor and was nice.
What I particularly appreciated was the three sauces that came with the meal, which kept it from getting boring. I especially liked the green sauce!
Overall Evaluation
To be honest, my impression is that it was neither particularly good nor bad. Atmospherically, I didn’t feel very motivated to revisit, but I thought the thickness of the chicken and the availability of three types of sauces could make it a good option when there wasn't much else to eat.
The culinary scene in Singapore is a fusion of Malaysian and diverse cultures, including influences from Chinese, Indian, Peranakan communities, and British immigrants, giving rise to a unique culinary style. At hawker stalls, you might see Chinese chefs using tamarind, turmeric, and other spices; Indian chefs making fried noodles, showcasing the impact of globalization. The "Black Dog Café" in Kaohsiung is inspired by the owner's nostalgia for local flavors when he worked in Singapore, leading him to recreate those tastes after returning to Taiwan…🫢
✅ Laksa Noodle Soup: The soup base is carefully simmered with various spices, with main ingredients including scallions, ginger, garlic, and dried shrimp, then seasoned with lemongrass, laksa leaves, chili, and pepper, ultimately cooked with curry and coconut milk for a rich flavor. They use thick noodles that absorb the broth well while maintaining a chewy texture. It is served with toppings like eggs, meatballs, mushrooms, and greens.
✅ Hokkien Fried Prawn Noodles: The whole bowl has an aromatic scent of spices, and the flavor is moderately salty, not overly strong. The toppings include eggs, bean sprouts, chives, and six prawns, resulting in a smooth overall taste.
✅ Bak Kut Teh (Pork Bone Tea): The broth is lighter, soy sauce-colored, with a subtle herbal aroma. The rib meat is tender and well-seasoned.
✅ Laksa Water Lily: Stir-fried with shredded meat and mushrooms, each bite carries the aroma of laksa. Although not particularly strong, the flavor is sufficiently good, and the water lily retains its crispness.
✅ Kaya Toast: The toast was disappointing. By the time it arrived, it had already cooled down, and the crust, which should have been crisp, became softer. The butter inside was slightly at room temperature; chilled butter would have improved it even more. As for the Kaya sauce, while the flavor is rich, it tends to be saltier compared to other places.
✅ Iced Lemon Tea: The acidity and sweetness are balanced, but the flavor isn’t particularly strong.

"Black Dog Café" used to be a very popular spot during college years, initially located at Xiziwan before moving to its current position. However, after this visit, it’s noticeable that the owner has made some adjustments to the flavors, leaning more towards Taiwanese tastes rather than authentic Singaporean cuisine. The dishes still have a certain deliciousness, but they don’t quite meet the high expectations one might have. Although the prices are somewhat high, the portion sizes for each item are quite large.

🥖 Foodie Chubby 🥖 🥄 Eating and Drinking in Taichung 🥢
Thanks to Fooday for providing a platform where I can eat and earn at the same time
🤣🤣
Beiping Road in the North District of Taichung is filled with a variety of delicious food, making it a hotly contested area! It has all kinds of common snacks and many options for international cuisine!
"Shile San Singaporean Snacks" is a newly opened Singaporean restaurant that has been quite popular lately, often packed with people and requiring a wait of about 20-40 minutes! I came specially to try it out! The overall decor of the restaurant feels minimalistic and trendy, dominated by white tones, and there’s a large lion head at the entrance, making it very recognizable! I waited about 20 minutes for a table after arriving, and once seated, I quietly waited for my food to be served!
Dining experience reviewed alongside photos!
I hope my simple sharing helps everyone get to know the restaurant better; this is a food recommendation I will revisit~

Deliciousness of the food ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Below are my simple food comments! Taste is subjective, and personal preferences vary! Friends passing by are welcome to give it a try!
The shrimp roe soup is very thick and delicious, with a strong flavor. It also includes cabbage, which adds a nice touch. The shrimp oil enhances the overall aroma a lot! The fine noodles have a bit of chewiness, which I really like. Today, I had the Tong Huasun 2.0, and the shrimp balls with shrimp roe inside were very tasty. The chicken char siu was very tender with a grilled aroma that made it smooth to eat. The pork char siu was just okay, but the shrimp wontons were plump and large. The fried fish slices were also very delicious; I would order more.
Thank you Fooday🥳 for making me want to try more different foods🍽
🚩Location🧭
Located on the section of Taiping Road in Caotun Township, Nantou County, across from the Hi-Life convenience store; come from the Zhongxing New Village interchange on National Highway 3, turn left at Taiping Road section one and you will reach it shortly.
🪑About the overall atmosphere🎡
The yellow sign is noticeable, the air conditioning is on inside, and there are two national flags displayed; there may be parking spots outside, or you can park on the roadside across the street; parking is relatively easy. The indoor seating can accommodate about 20 people.
💰About the prices💰
Penang shrimp noodles are $130. I was torn between choosing Bak Kut Teh rice or Hainanese chicken rice, but in the end, I thought I’d try the shrimp noodles since I had never had them before.
🍴About the dishes☕
The shrimp flavor in the broth is very strong, so rich that I almost couldn't finish it because it felt a bit overwhelming. There are three shrimp, which have been deheaded and shelled, leaving just a bit of the tail; there are also two small fish balls, half an egg, and a little bit of greens. The shrimp aren't large, but they should be considered fresh; the fish balls don’t have much filling and can be classified as fish balls. I have to say that the noodles are not tasty, with a sandy texture and they don’t absorb the broth well, plus there’s no chewiness.
🤨Conclusion♥
It seems that the Bak Kut Teh that everyone on Google highly recommends is the highlight here. The broth for the shrimp noodles is good, but the noodles really don’t cut it. I will still give it another chance next time to try the Bak Kut Teh or Hainanese chicken rice.

📍 Location and Transportation: Located in the heart of Xindian City, New Taipei City, between Qizhang Station and Dapinglin Station, a 7-minute walk, parking is inconvenient.
🏠 Space: The interior decoration is bright, and the seating is spacious; however, the leather on the wall seat has fine wrinkles, and there is some leakage from the ceiling. I wanted to use a children's seat but found it covered in dust. The cleanliness and maintenance of the details are not very well done.
💰 Ordering and Payment: Orders are placed and settled at the counter; mobile payment is accepted 🆗, invoices are available ✔️, and you can order by scanning a QR code for dine-in. I saw an elderly customer enter the store, but the staff did not inform him that he could order at the counter, and he left after a while, indicating that the service attitude could be more friendly.
🍽️ Dishes:
When it comes to Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine, the most well-known would probably be Hainanese chicken and Bak Kut Teh. At Xingdao, you can enjoy various authentic Singaporean and Malaysian dishes with diverse options.
Hainanese Chicken Rice: You can choose between turmeric rice or chicken oil rice; I chose turmeric rice today. It was generously topped with Hainanese chicken and served with two small pieces of broccoli and cherry tomatoes (not enough vegetables!). The yellow-green-red color combination aroused my appetite, and the deboned chicken was fresh and tender enough to eat without sauce. Those who like to switch up flavors can dip it in three types of sauces.
You can order items individually or add a set for an additional 50 NTD: which includes greens and a drink/soup (choose one); today, I selected water spinach and coconut water.
I usually order the clear Bak Kut Teh, which has a rich broth containing some mushrooms and goji berries. Although the flavor is on the heavier side, it's still quite tasty.
Overall, the food is above average. The open kitchen allows you to see a lot of Hainanese chicken 😋
This is a place I would occasionally think of visiting. It would be even better if the older parts of the decoration could be improved.
The Black Dog Canteen was previously opened near the Gushan Ferry Station. At that time, the Black Dog was so crowded that it was hard to find a seat. There were two big dogs inside that were super cute, and they sold authentic Singaporean delicacies!
After moving to a new address for a while, I finally had the opportunity to try it. The noodles in the laksa pot are also very rich and delicious. The noodle body is soaked in the soup and soaked up the soup. It is super delicious. Unfortunately, the chicken legs inside are a bit off, and they are completely boiled. The taste is not integrated with the laksa. It should be cooked separately and put in, but overall it is delicious.
White Bak Kut Teh Peanut Pork Knuckle Noodles 💰200, I don’t really recommend it, it’s a bit overwhelming, the soup is almost all seasoned with pepper, there are four pieces of pig’s trotters in it, it’s quite tender and delicious, the portion is not too expensive On the low side, I will avoid this place if I come again next time.
