Location: Xindian District, New Taipei City

There’s a chain congee shop on Zhongzheng Road. I noticed that this chain store is becoming increasingly common in many places. I’ve always wanted to find an opportunity to try it. Today, the weather has turned cooler, and I suddenly thought of going to eat there. I arrived earlier than the usual dining time, so the shop was almost empty. After quickly being seated and placing my order, I noticed that by around six o'clock, the place was fully occupied, and there were many takeout customers as well. The waiting time was a bit longer, but they offered unlimited spicy pickled vegetables, fried dough sticks, and black tea, which I felt had a great value for money.

🌟 Kimchi Cheese Matsusaka Pork
When it arrived at the table, it was filled with the aroma of kimchi. After taking a bite, it tasted very much like the kimchi hot pot from a stinky tofu place—almost identical, bringing back the same feeling. The Matsusaka pork was quite generous in portion and satisfying. However, the kimchi flavor was quite strong, somewhat losing the lightness you would expect when eating congee. By the end, I found it a bit too rich for my taste.

🌟 Scrambled Egg Beef Congee
This one is a more basic and lighter congee dish. It’s made with chicken broth as the base, so it’s very flavorful and aromatic without being too rich. I highly recommend it!

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here and would definitely visit again. 👍

【Foodholic Niko @ Taipei】

"Zhou Da Fu Datong Chang'an Store" is located near Taipei Main Station, about a 4-minute walk from Exit Y15. This branch is newly opened, and there are lots of flower baskets outside, making it hard to find the entrance.

Recently, due to gastroenteritis, I was looking for somewhere to eat congee and coincidentally came across this new Zhou Da Fu. The store’s decor is quite comfortable. Besides having a lot of congee options, they also sell noodles and some side dishes. Additionally, items like fried dough sticks, spicy pickled vegetables, and red tea are self-service, so you can take as much as you like. The fact that you can freely take fried dough sticks adds to the experience (though I can't eat fried dough sticks because of my gastroenteritis...).

Mushroom and Chicken Congee $95
The flower mushrooms seem to be shiitake mushrooms? There were quite a lot of shiitake mushrooms in my bowl, and it had a good amount of saltiness, which felt like it was seasoned with soy sauce. They also added an egg, so there were egg flower-like bits.
However, I found it a bit confusing that although it's a chicken congee, I seemed to have eaten a lot of lean pork and didn’t particularly notice if there was any chicken; maybe both were included.
After finishing the whole bowl, I felt quite full!

If it weren't for this gastroenteritis, I think adding fried dough sticks and spicy pickled vegetables would be great! I also noticed that the century egg and lean pork congee that others were eating looked pretty appealing~

After visiting the Summer Palace, we came to this restaurant.
Initially, the reviews I saw online were quite good, and it seemed like a place where locals from Beijing would come for home-style cooking!
Once inside, it truly had the authentic Beijing flavor as locals were making the food.
Of course, it's no surprise that the service attitude was also very local...
It's not as polite as in a city or a hotel; rather, the staff was quite casual and indifferent, and they even charged extra for water or utensils!

We ordered~
❤️ Noodles with Fried Sauce
I can't really say it was delicious, just a very bland bowl of sweet and salty noodles with a bit of cucumber. If you're looking to fill your stomach, it certainly can, as the portion is very large, but honestly, even a small bowl feels quite heavy!

❤️ Grilled Lamb Pocket Bread
The portion of grilled lamb was also quite large, with a rather strong flavor. The pocket bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, which was quite tasty. Paired with the lamb, it smelled great, but I felt it was a bit too greasy, making it difficult to finish the whole thing comfortably!

❤️ Tomato Sole Fish
This fish is actually what we call basa fish; the meat is very soft and tender. However, I felt this large bowl was almost entirely tomato soup, and the amount of fish wasn't particularly generous. The assorted mushrooms were quite good, but the biggest drawback was that too much MSG was added. After just a few bites, I could feel the overwhelming taste of MSG! If someone isn’t used to eating MSG, they might find it intolerable!

Overall... while it was still edible, I wouldn’t make a special trip back to eat at this restaurant. I might not even return if it were next to my house...

Taiwanese people really can't get enough of puns 🤣

The dining environment is bright, and the chairs are quite comfortable to sit in. They provide drinks and you tiao (fried dough sticks) for dine-in. The you tiao has a texture very similar to cookies, and it pairs really well when mixed into the porridge.

This time, I ordered the salted egg and century egg porridge. It was served very full, and the porridge was so thick that you couldn't see the rice shape anymore. It was extremely creamy, and there were vegetables, tofu skin, and mushrooms mixed in. The portion was more than enough, and the temperature was just right— not too hot for the mouth, but still something to be cautious about while eating.

The other dish was tomato vegetable porridge served with udon noodles instead. The soup included red dates and goji berries, along with some vegetables and tofu skin. The udon noodles had a nice chewy texture. It's vegetarian-friendly, but you still need to remind the restaurant about the specific ingredients you don't eat, like not adding scallions and garlic.

All dishes can be made spicy or adjusted for spiciness. A little spicy is generally acceptable for those who don't eat spicy food. So if you don’t like spicy, just skip the spice! 🙂‍↔️

In Taitung City, there aren't many options for congee, and even fewer chains. I used to only know about Kowloon Cantonese Congee. So whenever I had diarrhea or felt unwell and wanted to eat congee, I wouldn't know where to go. Ever since this shop opened, there are many more varieties to choose from.

The menu offers a wide range of congee items, from the classic preserved egg and lean meat congee to innovative flavors like kimchi cheese Matsusaka pork congee, catering to everyone's taste. The congee isn't overly watery either; you can still feel the grains of rice, and the meat and vegetables included are fresh and not mushy, which is completely different from the chain congee shops I've been to before. There are also many side dishes available to order, such as mouth-watering chicken, blanched greens, braised duck blood, and braised intestines, making the whole congee-eating experience much richer.

The environment in the shop is also very spacious and comfortable, making it a great place to have a meal and chat with friends. Although the price of the congee is relatively high, I believe the quality of the ingredients and service makes it worth it.

The store of Dou Dou Bear is very simple and plain, so if you don't see the sign, it's easy to pass by and overlook this place. However, the owner of this store is very friendly and has a generous personality! When I told him that my scooter ran out of gas on the way here, he directly gave me a brand-new bottle that is usually used to store soy milk for business so that I could fill it with gas. That was really kind of him!

Dou Dou Bear primarily offers three types of meals: clay pot noodles, savory porridge, and soups and drinks. For the clay pot noodles, you can choose between shredded chicken noodles, spaghetti, or udon noodles, catering to different preferences. The savory porridge has options like milkfish, clams, and more to choose from. In addition to the aforementioned flavors, there are also freshly made soy milk and black tea available for purchase.

This time, I ordered the clay pot spaghetti. The ingredients were quite decent, featuring a large shrimp (I'm not sure if it's a grass shrimp), several clams, an egg, bok choy, a bit of hot pot ingredients, and lean pork, among others. The price is somewhat on the higher side, but you can tell from the comfort level of the restaurant and the details that the owner is serious about his products, so I recommend everyone to come and give it a try.

Near the Jing'an MRT station, I passed by many times but never ate here. That day, I happened to want a late-night snack and heard they are open 24 hours, so I decided to buy something.

▪️ Cantonese Congee $65

My friend chose the Cantonese congee. I usually rarely eat Cantonese congee; I usually have century egg and lean pork congee. Since my friend ordered this, I thought I would give it a try. It had quite a lot of toppings, including some seafood and pig liver, among other things. The flavor was quite tasty, and a hot bowl was perfect for a late-night snack.

Overall, it was not bad, and there were many other items to choose from. There were also seats available for dining in, and you could order online. Even at 10 PM, there were quite a few people, making it a good choice for a late-night snack.

Braces Review: Not sure if there is a restroom for takeout

This chef's Cantonese congee is located near Jing'an Station and is a great late-night snack option in Zhonghe, almost always open for business, and you can often see a line of customers. The restaurant offers not only congee but also a variety of options like noodles, braised pork rice, and side dishes, and it supports online ordering, which is very convenient.

This time, the Cantonese congee I ordered was 75 NTD, and the ingredients were abundant, including shrimp, squid, pig liver, and lean pork. Each bite had great depth, and having a bowl for dinner or a late-night snack is both warming and satisfying. I recommend it for those looking for late-night snacks or who enjoy congee.

The Rice Porridge Restaurant "Mi Mo Zhuo Fang" is located in Hualien's Another Village Cultural and Creative Park and has a distinctive vintage artistic style. The main focus is more on brunch, but since my visit was during dinner time, it was not a typical brunch experience.

Today we enjoyed a dish of shredded spicy pepper omelet and a watermelon rind omelet, totaling 60 TWD.

Shredded Spicy Pepper Omelet:
The crispy and refreshing shredded spicy peppers are finely enveloped within the soft and tender omelet, resulting in an excellent texture.

Watermelon Rind Omelet:
Watermelon rind is an ingredient that modern people are quite unfamiliar with. To describe it simply, it is a kind of pickled vegetable made using traditional methods. Previously, the material usually came from the leftover watermelon skin after the fruit was removed, but now it mainly uses young watermelons taken after the fruit has been harvested.

Personally, I'm not very fond of watermelon.
However, the watermelon rind in this omelet has a subtle tartness and saltiness paired with a light watermelon fragrance, beautifully enveloped by the soft omelet, making it a delightful experience.

Overall, this artistic rice porridge restaurant is definitely worth a try. The shop is located at number 3, synergistically operated within the same building as another business (number 1), called "Chong Chu Yi Piao Wei," with different entrances.

Since I visited during dinner time, the porridge and various small dishes were already sold out. So aside from the much-desired omelet, the remaining options were main dishes from "Chong Chu Yi Piao Wei," which I will leave to discuss in the next article. I will definitely revisit if I get the chance to come back to Hualien.

I highly recommend it to everyone!

This restaurant is quite a famous congee chain. I happened to pass by for some business and thought I wouldn’t want to look for other options, so I decided to give it a try.

The environment in the shop is pretty clean and comfortable, and the lighting is bright, so overall, it's quite pleasant to sit in.

This time, I ordered the sesame oil chicken congee. Firstly, the sesame oil flavor is really too strong; the whole bowl is overwhelmingly saturated with sesame oil, and aside from the sesame oil taste, there is no other flavor, so the congee’s broth is quite unremarkable. As for the chicken, it was also unsatisfactory and not that tasty.

Overall, this place does offer a lot of small side dishes, such as unlimited youtiao (fried dough sticks), which adds some points. However, I do not recommend ordering the sesame oil chicken congee; it’s really not that good.
