There's a small restaurant near Costco in Nantun, Taichung that I hadn't noticed before. I met up with a friend and decided to try it out.
To my surprise, the value for money is quite high—especially in a world where meals often cost over 100 (NTD). For just 190 (NTD), you can get a set meal without any additional service charges. No wonder the turnover rate is high, and the seats are always full.
The fried food is quite good, but everyone should really order a sparkling drink to help with the richness of the meal. Details about dining options are provided below the photos for reference. Additionally, there's shichimi powder and pepper available for everyone to use. If you're near Costco, you should definitely give it a try!
Service Quality: The staff's English is very good.
Menu Items: Seasonal Limited Yellowtail Set Meal, Pudding, Strawberry Cheesecake, Seasonal Limited Strawberry Mille-Feuille.
Food Taste: The seasonal limited yellowtail set meal is truly amazing. This is the freshest and most delicious yellowtail I have ever had in Japan. It is fresh, tender, and has a slightly sweet taste, which is a dish I still miss after leaving Ine.
Other Suggestions: The desserts are actually just okay and not something you must have. If you don't like raw food, you can consider ordering the cheesecake and pudding, as dairy products are quite famous in Tango, which is also reflected in the deliciousness of the desserts.
I really like this place; it's clean, bright, comfortable, and serves food quickly at reasonable prices. All the customers are locals. The simple grilled pork set meal may seem basic, but the side dishes are quite good—it looks simple but is even more delicious.
The menu is available in various languages. This main store is not conveniently located for tourists who don’t drive, but there are many branch stores situated near public transportation, even near Sapporo Station, to meet different customer needs.
If I remember correctly, the pork bowl uses pork loin, and the mixed set meal comes with pork belly. The doneness and the sauce pair perfectly with the rice, and it’s amusing to see the chef using a hairdryer while grilling. There are two types of side dishes to choose from, simple yet tasty, and you can upgrade the miso soup to tonjiru for an extra charge. The additional wasabi is very special and worth a try. Highly recommend!
The Shizuoka Katsumasa Japanese Pork Cutlet Nangang Global Store is located in the themed restaurant area on the basement floor of the Nangang Station Global Shopping Center. It has excellent transportation access, making it easy to reach by MRT, Taiwan Railways, or High-Speed Rail.
This time, I enjoyed the scallion and radish puree pork loin cutlet set, a small portion of the pork tenderloin cutlet set, along with an extra pork tenderloin, yams puree, and cheese cake and brown rice tea that came with the set, totaling 924 TWD.
Scallion and radish puree pork loin cutlet set:
The thick, crispy pork loin cutlet is generously topped with chopped scallions and radish puree, and garnished with a slice of fresh lemon. The batter is crispy and not greasy, the cutlet is thick but not dry, and the scallions and radish puree are liberal. The freshness of the lemon slice adds a perfect finishing touch.
Small portion of pork tenderloin cutlet set:
The tenderloin is more tender compared to the loin, with the juices well-sealed, making it easy to bite through. The batter is thin and not greasy, and the temperature is well controlled. The extra pork tenderloin ordered is just as impressive as the one in the set.
Customers can choose between white rice or barley rice for their meal, with the option to add yam puree for free. The barley rice has a chewier texture compared to white rice, and the yam puree is finely mashed, smooth, and melts in your mouth. The unique sticky texture of the yam pairs perfectly with the barley rice, so I ordered an additional serving.
Upon seating, three types of side dishes are served, which include pickled radish, Korean kimchi, and burdock strips. They are refreshing, appetizing, and help cleanse the palate, though unfortunately they are served once and cannot be refilled. The miso soup comes in pork or kelp flavors; I first chose the pork miso soup, which was hearty with a rich broth that was not overly salty, and I found the kelp miso soup just as delicious in the refill.
Shredded cabbage can also be ordered as a side, which pairs well with the restaurant’s sesame sauce or Japanese-style dressing.
Cheese cake:
The performance of the cheese cake is average, with a strong milky flavor and a solid texture.
Brown rice tea:
The aroma is well-preserved, with a delicate earthy scent in the aftertaste.
Overall, it is a consistently good chain Japanese set meal restaurant with excellent frying skills. The prices match the quality, and the interior is bright, clean, and comfortable. Although the dining time is quite busy, and staff may not notice you immediately, overall service remains satisfactory.
I recommend it to everyone!

I haven’t eaten at any pork chop restaurant other than Fusheng Pavilion in Taiwan for a long time because I think it's already quite good 😂. I happened to be nearby for dinner and didn’t know what to eat, so I chose this place. I arrived around 5 PM; there weren’t as many people as usual, but I still had a short wait before being seated.
▪️ Pork loin chop set meal (160g) $380
▪️ Signature special meal $470
(pork loin, shrimp, chawanmushi, dessert, drink)
· Basque cheesecake · Calpis
After being seated, they served tea first, and we ordered through a QR code. After placing the order, they started bringing out some shredded cabbage, complimentary small dishes (pickled radish, kimchi, burdock, all very tasty) and let us grind sesame seeds ourselves (the sesame smelled amazing~).
Both dishes used pork loin, which was very tender and had a crispy exterior. I preferred to pair it with yellow mustard rather than the pork sauce, which cut through the greasiness nicely. The shrimp was average. I must say their white rice was delicious; the rice, shredded cabbage, and even the soup were all refillable. The sesame dressing for the cabbage was excellent, and the soup was very flavorful, with the pork in the soup being tender and delicious too. The drinks were typical, but surprisingly, even the dessert, the Basque cheesecake, was genuinely good!! The only thing we weren't used to was the chawanmushi, which was so soft it felt like there was very little egg in it, and it seemed like they added a bit too much seasoning sauce.
Overall, I really liked this place!! It’s been a long time since I had tasty pork chops, and the staff occasionally checks on the tables to see if we need refills, which they bring promptly. I really liked that.

This time, I visited Nanto with my family to dine inside Okinawa's Gyokusendo Cave, and the overall experience was satisfying. The restaurant features Japanese tatami seating, with a spacious and bright environment, thoughtfully including a designated play area for children, making it very suitable for family dining.
The menu offers a variety of choices, among which the two servings of large shrimp tempura rice bowl received the highest praise. The tempura was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, fresh and juicy. The local Okinawan specialty, regular soba (soft bone ramen), had a refreshing broth with a bonito flavor, and its smooth texture made it very enjoyable. The pork cutlet curry had a crispy exterior, thick and juicy meat, paired with a rich curry sauce that was very satisfying.
The kids' meal was also designed quite cutely, with just the right portion, making the little ones happy. Additionally, the tofu set meal was light and healthy, a great option for those who prefer refreshing flavors. Whether it was the food, atmosphere, or service, it reflected a lot of care, making it a relaxing and delicious lunchtime during our trip to Gyokusendo.
It seems there is a restaurant that also offers traditional kaiseki cuisine with private dining services. There is a second floor that I didn't go up to, and I'm not sure if the first floor only sells set meals; however, the place feels like a strong and experienced establishment. It's clean, comfortable, and bright, and it seems that many celebrities have visited, like many Japanese restaurants, they also broadcast baseball games.
The akajita-don is a fried shrimp rice bowl, and most of the other tables were ordering this. We ordered the kurojita-don, which is a crab rice bowl. The batter is soft and crispy, and while the crab meat is quite sweet and fresh, there isn't much of it. The fried shrimp with soba noodles was very warming to eat in the snow, but the fried shrimp was different from the one in the akajita-don, so we later ordered an additional akajita fried shrimp. It was tasty but not spectacular.
The set meals come with pickled vegetables that can be purchased separately, which are really good.

It seems there are more and more branches of Matsuya. Usually, my family only eats here when we feel like it. We've had beef bowls and grilled meat rice before, which are pretty standard. I have the strongest impression of their curry; ever since trying it once, I almost always order curry, and this time was no exception.
▪️Classic Curry Beef Rice Medium $185
I haven't had it in a while, but I remember their curry being spicy and quite fragrant. This time, I found the curry surprisingly salty. The portion of rice is generous but still not enough to balance it out; I feel like they could reduce the sauce to two-thirds (it might still be salty). The beef is tasty and has some seasoning, but combined with the sauce, it becomes too salty. I recommend not mixing all the sauce together if you decide to try it...
▪️Beef Rice Medium $95
It's not a large bowl, but it's fine if you just want a quick bite. The beef sauce pairs well with the rice, and their rice is quite good.
▪️Rich Tonjiru $55
This is more of a pork soup, with less miso flavor. It has a bit of oil but is okay, and it has a lot of ingredients inside. I personally quite like this bowl.
Overall, the flavors are normal. You order using a machine upon entering and then wait for your number to collect your food. You also need to clean your own table after eating. Their business hours are quite long, making it a good option for late-night snacks. Although I found the curry a bit salty this time, I still like the items. Additionally, they also offer breakfast items, which is cool; I haven't tried that yet!
Shared a 298 rice bowl set and a 378 deluxe set with friends.
The portions are very large and fulfilling!
For the main course, you can choose beef, pork, chicken, fish, or vegetarian, and the chef can also mix and match.
I ordered the fish rice bowl set, and there were two slices!
The deluxe set had four slices of beef, which weren't very tender but were cooked very deliciously!
There was popcorn on the rice, which was a very unique combination and surprisingly tasty.
The soup had a lot of ingredients, including various mushrooms, seaweed, and tofu.
The fruits and lettuce in the salad were very fresh, and the dressing was passion fruit flavored and very tasty!
The drinks weren't listed on the menu and were asked by the waiter after we ordered; you could choose between black tea and kumquat lemon, and the kumquat lemon was very delicious! (Neither of us ordered black tea, so I don't know how it is.)
The Qingming holiday was arranged for a two-day short trip, and since we were staying in Jiaoxi at night, we reserved a restaurant in advance due to concerns that popular places would have long wait times. ☺️
When making the reservation, I informed them that we had a child and requested to avoid a counter table. However, on the day of the visit, we arrived 10 minutes early only to be told by the owner that the previous guests were late and might need another 20 minutes. The counter was available for immediate seating though. I was a bit taken aback at first (thinking that if the previous guests were late, they should inform them to shorten their meal time rather than affecting the next guests). However, throughout the dining experience, the owner was very polite and even treated our daughter to complimentary appetizers and fruit 🍇, which showed their willingness to make amends.
The restaurant is quite small, with only 6 seats at the counter and 2 tables for 4 people. The owners are an elderly couple, with one additional staff member (or possibly their son 👦). The menu is straightforward, with only 3 set meals, and other options for a la carte sushi 🍣, Japanese dishes, and drinks. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a small shop in Japan 🇯🇵.
Today, we ordered four sets for 4 adults and 1 child, plus a portion of fried chicken. Each set includes a main dish, three side dishes, miso soup, a plate of tempura, and white rice. An appetizer was provided beforehand, which was chilled octopus salad 🐙; the texture was very chewy, and the wasabi six-grid salad was voted as the best dish of the day. The main dishes included ginger sauce pork, sashimi, and grilled fish. Although the portions were not large, we could sample a variety of dishes. The sashimi platter had 6 types of fish, but the serving felt a bit small. The grilled fish that day was supposed to be flounder, but since I usually eat that often, I paid extra to switch it to my favorite red snapper 🐟. The grilled fish was tasty, though the size was average. The tempura included shrimp 🍤, eggplant 🍆, sweet potato 🍠, and enoki mushrooms 🍄, which made for a generous plate. The fried chicken was well-marinated and tender 😋, and we were also served a small plate of fruit snacks at the end, making for a perfect ending.
The overall dining atmosphere felt like a visit to a small shop in Japan. 👍 The owners were great at hospitality and focused on the quality of the dishes. However, at this price point of 700 yuan, I felt the cost-performance ratio wasn't very high. Interestingly, I had just had afternoon tea the day before at a spot that also offered similar set meals, and it looked even more substantial on other people's tables. I hope to visit again next time for a different experience. 🎁
