The pork rib and shrimp rice is a bit greasy, but the soft-boiled egg adds creaminess, and the miso soup is sweet and filled with plenty of tofu, making it delicious. It has a generous portion and good cost performance.
The popular shop has a limited number of seats inside, and there are many takeout customers. It has a lively atmosphere typical of local Taiwanese stores, and the staff kindly guide you.
The staff seem busy, but they kindly tell you where to sit and how to place an order.
When I heard that Kiilung was recommended for a trip, I decided to give it a try! It was located down an alley just a step off the main street, so at first, I didn’t know where it was and ended up getting lost.
【Atmosphere of the Store】
It’s a popular place, but there are only a few seats inside, so I had to wait about 15 minutes, and there were many takeout customers as well. Everyone on the staff seemed busy, and the lively sounds typical of a local Taiwanese shop were all around, but they kindly taught me where to sit and wait, and how to place my order!
【Taste of the Food】
I ordered the pork ribs and shrimp rice and miso soup! The pork ribs and shrimp rice was a bit oily, but the creaminess of the soft-boiled egg matched it perfectly 🍳 (though I did feel a bit sick afterward...). The miso soup was sweet compared to Japanese miso soup, and there were plenty of tofu chunks in it which made it delicious! It tasted like the miso soup served in school lunches, haha. But at only 10 NT dollars, it’s a good idea to get soup if you're ordering a main dish✨.
【Overall Evaluation】
Delicious food that is voluminous yet affordable, it offers great value for money👌! The chicken leg rice and pork bone soup that my friend had also looked really tasty, so I would definitely like to go again!
This is a well-known bento shop in Keelung, located within an alley. Even on a weekday afternoon before 5 PM, customers are already starting to gather.
A "greasy" warning is posted at the entrance to caution visitors, which suggests they have faced quite a few complaints. 😂
The air inside is filled with the strong aroma of food, and the bento only has one side dish (not counting the sauerkraut), unlike traditional bentos that usually have multiple sides.
I ordered the pork rib and shrimp rice. The fried pork ribs were thin and soft. According to the author of "Keelung Flavors," their semi-cooked egg is highly sought after and performs well. However, the main characteristic seems to be that this fried egg is treated with a dry frying batter, and the texture of the dry batter particles is quite unique. The shrimp is very small but also stands out because of the batter texture.
For dining in, you can choose either pork bone soup or miso soup; I opted for the latter, which is a traditional skipjack tuna miso soup. The skipjack tuna flavor is strong but not overly salty, and with a few pieces of tofu added, the soup is highly recommended.
