Azhong Charcoal Grill wins with its fragrant charcoal aroma, offering classic grilled items such as dried tofu, green beans, and squid. The flavors are simple and straightforward, with a special recommendation for the slightly charred sweetness of the dried tofu and the chewy texture of the squid, which pair perfectly with beer.
The atmosphere of the night market, combined with the enjoyment of bringing your own beer, elevates the evening to an izakaya mode, with an environment full of a homely and relaxed feeling.
Located in the area of Dalong Street Night Market in Taipei, Ah Chong Charcoal Grilled is a great place for many people to satisfy their cravings for some savory grilled food after dinner. This time we ordered a few classic grilled items including dried tofu, green beans, squid, tempura, and mushrooms, along with a little twist— we brought our own beer by going next door to the supermarket to buy some freshly brewed 18-day draft beer, instantly upgrading the whole night to an izakaya vibe.
Ah Chong’s grilling method is quite straightforward and down-to-earth, relying not on fancy sauces but on the aroma of charcoal. Dried tofu is one of my favorite items, grilled with slightly charred edges, soaking up the sauce with a hint of sweetness, becoming more and more fragrant with each bite. The green beans, however, were a surprise—they are grilled to perfection without becoming dry, retaining their tender texture, flavored with pepper and charcoal aroma, making them perfect for munching on while sipping beer. The squid is the kind that becomes more and more addictive as you chew, with a great bounce but not tough, pairing perfectly with the cold beer.
Tempura and mushrooms serve as stable supporting roles, but they still have a significant presence. The tempura is grilled until the outer layer is slightly crispy and the inside is soft, absorbing the sauce quite well; the mushrooms retain their original moisture and have a fragrant and tender texture after grilling, making them the lightest option in the mix.
If you’re looking for a simple late-night snack, I highly recommend this place.
