This place is Zeng's Soy Milk, which is rumored to be a tart shop that got sidetracked by a soy milk shop.
Takeout only. I arrived around seven in the evening. Although there were quite a few people in line, it moved along quickly, and I got my order after waiting about twenty or thirty minutes.
The Portuguese egg tart costs 45 NT dollars each. Perhaps my expectations were too high because it tasted quite ordinary. The filling wasn’t fragrant enough and lacked the egg aroma and a hint of caramel flavor; the crust was not crispy enough, likely due to having cooled down for a while.
When freshly baked, the crust is crispy but also quite greasy, lacking a buttery or floury aroma, and the texture felt rather flat; the filling wasn't too sweet, had a bit of egg flavor but wasn't rich, and overall the taste was a bit bland.
In general, it isn’t a disappointment, but it’s not as amazing as the rumors suggest. It’s suitable as an everyday snack but isn't worth the special wait. To be honest, it still can't compare to what you find in Macau.
