Afternoon Tea4 ppl$352

Founded in 1832 in Kyoto, initially engaged in the tea business, it later transformed into a matcha specialty store. This Taipei Zhongshan store is the only overseas location! Moreover, the number of matcha specialty stores in Taiwan is quite limited.

This store began in 2016 and is located near the rear station of Taipei Main Station, not far from the Zhongshan District shopping area. Earlier this year, it relocated from its old site across the street to the new site, which has a slightly larger seating area for dining.

This time, with many people, we ordered a variety of items.

Even on weekends, there are almost always available seats, and there is no need to queue, which raises some concern about whether it can be successfully operated. Perhaps it is because the rules set by this store are too numerous, for example: no reservations (making it difficult to arrange afternoon tea with friends), a minimum spend of one meal per person (which means starting at 290 NT), a dining time limit of 60–70 minutes (not conducive to chatting), and weekday hours only until 7:30 PM (is this in line with Japanese stores?), with a 10% service charge only accepted in cash (which is quite uncommon).

Seasonal limited Uji matcha kudzu soup, this slightly thick sweet soup elevates the matcha flavor to another level, similar to eight-treasure sweet porridge but more delicate. The accompanying grilled mochi gradually softens in the kudzu soup, and since I enjoy the hard, crispy texture of the grilled mochi, I have to eat it quickly.
Uji matcha parfait (without whipped cream), features the most types of matcha-related desserts, making it a rather filling dessert. For an additional 40 yuan, you can upgrade to matcha fresh cream cake.
The matcha condensed milk Uji kinako set A comes with a cup of iced matcha (including matcha jelly). The ice cream is a classic item in matcha desserts, refreshing and not too rich, and the portion is quite generous. On the other hand, the red bean paste tastes even sweeter. The iced matcha has a strong tea flavor, making it more suitable to pair with desserts.
Finally, there is the traditional Uji matcha cappuccino, which feels the most ceremonial when you lift the tea bowl and take a sip; it is slightly bitter but not astringent. As for the "custard chestnut center," it is best enjoyed with a single bite.
The decoration is also very elegant, and the chandelier is styled to resemble a "chasen" (a tea whisk used for whisking matcha).
The menu also offers several types of matcha cooked dishes. I found online that "matcha curry" seems to be the signature dish of this brand, but the last time matcha curry rice was available was last year. Currently, there is only matcha curry soba noodles, perhaps because soba noodles are convenient to cook fresh?
