The meals are simple and nostalgic, with the pork chop egg toast being the signature dish, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, savory and enticing. The ham egg toast is humble and straightforward, perfect for filling up the stomach. Drinks like soy milk and red tea are mildly sweet and rich, making them a good match for the flavorful toasts.
Manmei Toast Shop creates a familiar and comforting late-night atmosphere, providing a simple yet satisfying experience, and it extends the youthful memories of many residents of Hsinchu.
Located on Beimen Street in Hsinchu, Manmei Toast Shop is a shared memory for many Hsinchu residents when it comes to late-night snacks. Not only do students love it, but it was also one of my favorite late-night spots during high school. This shop has been able to attract crowds for many years, not just because it stays open late, but also due to its simple yet nostalgic dishes that provide a sense of satisfaction and belonging.
Pork Chop Egg Toast
This can be considered Manmei's signature dish, best experienced when made fresh. Although the pork chop is relatively thin, its large size makes up for it. It's fried to a crispy exterior while maintaining a certain tenderness inside. The pork chop is marinated beforehand, imparting a distinct salty flavor; it might be a bit strong on its own, but when sandwiched between the slightly crisp toast and the smooth egg, it achieves a balance that makes the saltiness appetizing. The charm of this toast lies in its simplicity and straightforwardness, and I can't help but order it every time I visit.
Ham Egg Toast
Since I could only choose one pork chop egg dish, I went with the ham. While it lacks the wow factor of the pork chop, it offers a comforting homemade taste. The combination of ham and fried egg is unpretentious; the toast is lightly crispy, providing no surprises but also no mistakes. For someone who just wants to fill their stomach simply, this choice is just perfect.
As for drinks, my friend and I both ordered Soy Milk Hong Cha (Red Tea). This drink has a slightly sweet taste, combining the richness of soy milk with the fragrant aroma of red tea. The two blend together to be refreshing without the thinness of plain red tea. While it may not be extraordinary, it pairs well with the heavier-flavored toast!
The charm of Manmei Toast Shop lies in its "familiar and reassuring" late-night atmosphere. Although the dishes lack overly intricate details, they provide simple satisfaction in the late hours. Especially the pork chop egg toast, with its savory and crispy characteristics, makes one want to savor it again and again. For Hsinchu residents, it's not just a late-night snack shop; it's an extension of youthful memories.
