Zeng Ji Mochi is loved for its soft and chewy outer layer that doesn't stick to the teeth, as well as its rich peanut and sesame aroma. The classic flavors are particularly satisfying. However, the special flavor, such as matcha, seems a bit bland.
"Zeng Ji Mochi" in Hualien is definitely one of the most famous local souvenirs. Today, this shop is conveniently located just outside Hualien Station, making it easy for travelers from other places. In fact, there are many mochi shops in Hualien; several of them have the character "Zeng" in their name, like Zeng Ji, Zeng Master, and so on, which often confuses people.
On this visit to Zeng Ji Mochi, I felt that the prices have slightly increased compared to before, but they are still within an acceptable range. Their mochi has a very soft and chewy exterior, yet it doesn't stick to your teeth, which left a good impression on me. I recommend their peanut and sesame flavors, which are more classic choices, but the aroma is very outstanding, and the powder coating is generous. Once you take a bite, your mouth is filled with the rich taste of peanut or sesame, which is very satisfying. In comparison, the special flavors, like matcha, are not bad either, but I feel they lack a particularly standout feature and lose some of the traditional mochi's "simplicity."
Overall, Zeng Ji Mochi is a very reliable choice in Hualien, especially suitable for first-time visitors.
