Two Stars: Just Okay, Would Only Consider When There's Nothing Else Available
I was quite surprised by my evaluation of this place because I had high expectations before coming here! The restaurant has been operating for 100 years and is now in its fourth generation (I just found out that the name comes from the founder being short, which is why customers referred to him as "Shorty" ... that's interesting! 😝).
It was my friend from Malaysia who took me here. She mentioned that after visiting Tainan before, she missed this taste and had to come back. However, this time she felt that it was very different from before; it was a completely different experience. 😮 My first impression was that it doesn’t seem worth making a special trip for.
After we ordered, the food arrived at our table in about 1-2 minutes.
🐉 Shrimp Rice (Small) $65 (Large) $110
· There were four of us, and we ordered two small bowls to try the taste. Looking back at previous posts, it seems like the shrimp has shrunk a bit. 🤣 It looked a bit dry and shriveled, and eating it felt a bit empty. I wonder if it’s because of rising prices? The rice was on the softer side, and the flavor was average—overall it was a bit sweet with a hint of salt, quite refined, but for someone like me who prefers stronger flavors, it might not be satisfying.
Next to it, there was a small pot with pickled radish, but it was really very salty! I remember this meal was a bit extreme for me. :D However, I saw many people recommending the proper way to eat it is to add a salted duck egg. I wonder if it makes a big difference. If I pass by again, I might give it another chance!
