Hidden in the alleys of Fangliao Township, Pingtung, is the Shueidiliao Meatball Shop. This time, I ordered the traditionally made steamed meatballs and some noodle.
When the steamed meatballs were served, they were still hot. The skin was thin and chewy, and the smooth rice flour skin had a slight stickiness to it; this is the typical style of steamed meatballs from Pingtung. Biting into it, you can taste a subtle sweetness from the sweet potato flour and the soft texture after steaming. The filling had chunks of pork infused with pepper, which provided a pleasant aroma. Drizzled with a sweet and savory sauce and garlic paste, it achieved a nice balance of flavors and was not too greasy, offering a standard yet easily enjoyable meatball. The noodles also performed admirably, with a chewy texture and a rich aroma. The accompanying clear soup was an extra pleasant surprise; although not particularly rich, it was refreshing and helped cleanse the palate, making it perfect to alternate with the meatballs or noodles, completing this snack experience.
Overall, the most impressive aspect of the experience was the owner’s warmth. It’s common to see the owner warmly greeting customers in the shop. This personal touch added a bit of comfort and lingering taste to the snack. It’s ideal for friends wanting to experience local atmosphere and comforting snacks. If you’re in Fangliao, be sure to try this bowl of steamed meatballs infused with warmth and friendliness.
