Zhan Ji Spicy Hot Pot opened in 1994 in Xinzhuang, but what truly caught our attention was its eye-catching Taiwanese retro-style design, appearing in a small stall format at music festivals.
This Ximen location is situated in the basement of the former "Star Gathering Point KTV," with a large space that features colorful neon retro decor that is equally eye-catching.
Upon entering the restaurant, I learned that Zhan Ji has an Ocard membership. Sign up on the spot to purchase the plum pork for just 99 NT dollars, originally priced at 370 NT dollars. The quality of the meat at Zhan Ji is good, although somewhat pricey.
In terms of dishes, Zhan Ji's hot pot ingredients are top-notch, especially the homemade meatballs. The taro meatballs have a great ratio, with a distinct taro flavor, and the scallop mixed seafood meatballs are stuffed with squids and shrimp, offering a fresh taste with just one bite. These homemade meatballs don't have excessive fish paste to bulk them up; the fillings mostly retain the original texture of the ingredients, which is rare in ordinary hot pot restaurants.
After the meal, we were given a candy-wrapped "snowball," whose sweet and sour combination nicely concludes the flavors of the meal, and the design of the wrapping paper is truly exquisite.
What sets Zhan Ji apart the most is the "song request" service, allowing customers to change the music playing in the restaurant! With this kind of Taiwanese retro fashionable style, of course, we had to request songs from the Mei Hsiu group!
