The sauerkraut fish is fresh and delicious, with the sauerkraut being particularly outstanding. Paired with smooth and Q (chewy) potato starch, it creates a perfect texture. The spicy duck blood and stinky tofu are average in comparison, but the overall atmosphere is rich in night market street food style.
The night market shops have relatively small spaces, the environment is fairly clean, and they provide a unique lively atmosphere typical of night markets.
Old Chongqing Sauerkraut Fish is located in the middle section of Raohe Street Night Market, close to the exit of Tayou Road. Of course, the fame of Raohe Street Night Market speaks for itself.
Today, I enjoyed sauerkraut fish, spicy duck blood, and stinky tofu, totaling 440 NTD.
Sauerkraut Fish:
The menu describes it as about one to two servings, and that is indeed accurate. The sour, slightly spicy sauerkraut and the tender fish slices are both very delicious. The fish slices are tasty, but as described in the signature and on the bowl’s side, the sauerkraut is even more flavorful. The fragrant numbing quality of the green Sichuan pepper is also quite satisfying.
The staple choice is the classic potato starch, whose smooth and chewy texture pairs perfectly with the sour and salty sauce of the sauerkraut fish.
The shop also offered a deep-fried egg, adding an interesting variation to the sauerkraut fish with its crispy texture.
Spicy Duck Blood:
It's a standard duck blood dish with mild spiciness, but it doesn’t leave much of an impression.
Spicy Stinky Tofu:
Similarly, it’s a standard stinky tofu with a strong fermented taste.
Overall, it is a fairly delicious night market eatery. The popularity of sauerkraut fish can last so long in Taiwan for a reason; it's genuinely tasty and not just a passing trend.
Of course, this place has the typical downsides of street food vendors. For instance, the space is somewhat cramped, and the cleanliness is acceptable, but under higher standards, it may still be hard to accept... although I don’t mind it.
I recommend it to everyone.
