The set meals here are mainly Chinese cuisine, with a generous amount of meat, suitable for big eaters. The flavors are strong and pair well with rice. Although the cooking style leans towards Chinese, it might be somewhat disappointing for those expecting Western methods.
This is a shop hidden in an alley, which is somewhat difficult to find and requires some patience. The atmosphere inside is simple and unpretentious.
According to a friend from Pingtung, Lao Huo Fang is a hidden store in Pingtung because it is really tucked away in a small alley. You might be able to find its parking lot, but you can't find the store itself; even its name on Google says "Lao Huo Fang" is hard to find. 🤣
The dining system here is very simple; each person has a minimum consumption requirement of one set meal, and the main difference in the sets lies in the type of meat, while the other side dishes are basically the same. The meat options range from Chinese three-cup chicken to Western-style beef short ribs. However, the cooking methods and flavors are still mainly Chinese, because for the beef short rib set that I ordered, the meat is indeed beef short ribs, but it is prepared in a way that resembles beef stew rice, which is quite different from the dry-fried beef I had imagined! This is something I found hard to accept. However, if you approach it with a mindset of eating Chinese food, it could be seen as a pretty good casual dining spot. Since the flavors are a bit strong, each dish is quite tasty with rice!
Personally, I think that this type of non-exquisite casual meal is somewhat expensive in Pingtung, but they do give a generous amount of meat, definitely enough for two people. So if you're a big eater, I highly recommend this place.
