Located in an alley by the Songjiang Nanjing MRT Station, "Shan Guo Wu" is a bakery I recently stumbled upon. I went in, browsed, and bought three canelés. Usually, I only choose the classic flavor, but on that day I felt adventurous and decided to try some different flavors: I ended up with rich matcha, blueberry cheesecake, and caramel crunch.

Rich Matcha
At the moment of biting into it, the outer shell makes a "crunch" sound, crispy yet with a hint of caramel aroma; this light and crisp texture is the essence that canelé lovers care most about. The egg flavor and moist, bouncy texture in the middle are just right, and the matcha flavor comes through strong yet not overwhelming, with a slightly mature bitter note that tea drinkers will definitely love. It’s not like some matcha desserts on the market that are too sweet and mask the tea flavor, but rather it has a slight bitterness followed by sweetness, pairing well with coffee or unsweetened tea. For me, this one was the champion of the day. 🍵

Blueberry Cheesecake
With the first bite, the aroma of blueberries immediately bursts on the tip of my tongue, with a refreshing fruit taste balancing the tartness and sweetness. The cheesecake filling hidden in the middle is creamy and smooth, counterbalancing the inherent sweetness of the canelé with the acidity of the blueberries. This one feels particularly gentle and is great for those who enjoy refreshing desserts. It also makes for a little happiness during afternoon tea. 🫐

Caramel Crunch
Compared to the previous two, this one seemed a bit ordinary. Although the outer layer still retains the signature crispiness of Shan Guo Wu, the caramel aroma isn’t strong enough and lacks some layers and memorable points. It's not bad, just without the element of surprise.

Overall, Shan Guo Wu’s canelés are quite impressive, especially the outer crispness, which remains stable and doesn’t become soft over time — a point that is commendable. Among the three flavors, I would consider the rich matcha a must-buy, the blueberry cheesecake a delightful surprise, and the caramel crunch as something you can try or skip. Additionally, their sea salt rolls are also famous, and I hope to try them next time!
