【Foodholic Nako @ Kyoto, Japan】

"Rokkaku Ace" is located in the bustling and conveniently accessible Karasuma Oike area of Kyoto. It is a modern izakaya that specializes in creative cuisine. I added it to my must-eat list for this Kyoto trip after seeing a highly recommended video from a YouTuber.

Although this izakaya has a two-story dining area, the space isn't very large, so it's advisable to make a reservation. You can book a table online a month in advance, which is very convenient for international visitors. When we arrived on the day, we just reported our name, and the staff took us to our seats, where I was pleasantly surprised to see a name card with my name in Chinese!

To get to the conclusion: every dish was delicious and reasonably priced, highly recommended!

Satsuma chicken ¥780
I had no idea what this dish was based on the name. After it was served, I realized it was char-grilled raw chicken served with sesame oil. I had never tried this eating method in Taiwan, and it’s quite rare for Taiwanese people to eat raw chicken. However, this dish was my favorite of the trip! The combination with sesame oil was divine; you could taste the premium quality of the oil, which matched perfectly with the char-grilled raw chicken.

Potato salad ¥580
This isn’t just an ordinary potato salad; it comes topped with a large soft-cooked egg, ham, and salmon roe, which adds a fun popping texture. Dressed with sauce, it doesn’t feel heavy, making it a great cold dish to pair with hot meals.

Seaweed ham fried cheese spring roll ¥350/roll
I recommend having one roll per person. The cheese spring roll is topped with a slice of raw ham and sprinkled with seaweed powder. It’s genuinely creative cuisine, and the flavors blend remarkably well together, so make sure to eat it while hot!

Rokkaku chicken ¥980
This dish resembles Taiwanese stir-fried dishes but has a taste I've never experienced in Taiwan. It’s spicy, but not uncomfortably so—rather enjoyable, perfect with drinks! The chicken is slightly rare, soft and tender, especially when paired with the small garlic and onion slices inside. Absolutely fantastic, highly recommended!
