"Smart Coffee," located in the Teramachi shopping street in Kyoto, is a very popular and long-established café that opened in 1932, making it more than 90 years old—almost a century-old establishment.
The hours of operation start at 8 AM. We arrived at 9 AM and saw a very long line in front of us, which was quite daunting. We ended up waiting about an hour before being seated. If you want to be among the first customers for breakfast, it's recommended to arrive before opening!
Cafe au Lait (Hot) ¥650
I saw some reviews saying their coffee is quite average, but I found the hot latte to be pretty good. The texture is very smooth, and there's enough milk flavor. It's a pleasantly tasty latte, although the portion is rather small.
Mixed Sandwiches Ham & Egg ¥900
The sandwich looks very Japanese-style Western food, with ungrilled toast filled with fried egg, ham, lettuce, and tomato (but I don’t eat tomatoes, so I asked the restaurant not to include it). The texture of the fried egg is similar to tamagoyaki, and it's super delicious when it's freshly cooked and hot! Even though the toast is simple, it probably has some mysterious power from the mayo spread, giving it a feeling of happiness when eating!
French Toast ¥800
The French toast is truly a must-order item at "Smart Coffee." If you don't order this, it's almost like you haven't been there. Because… it’s incredibly delicious!!!!! Although it looks quite ordinary, the softness of the toast achieves an unbelievable level. Drizzle a bit of maple syrup on it, oh my god, it’s amazing! How do the Japanese make such great French toast!
Hot Cake ¥800
Two thick pancakes (similar to the kind at McDonald's) topped with cubes of butter and served with maple syrup. Personally, I feel that compared to the French toast, the pancakes seem a little inferior, but they are still quite enjoyable, as the more you eat, the more you can taste the flour's aroma. If you have enough of an appetite, I still recommend ordering them to try!
Even though the wait is long, I still want to come back the next time I'm in Kyoto!
