The Starry Sea Dining House is located on Yanji Street in the Da’an District, about a five to ten-minute walk from the National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall and the Taipei Arena. Although the main street is bustling with activity, the atmosphere around this shop's corner has a touch of tranquil Japanese charm.
This time I enjoyed Set B, a customized sashimi rice bowl, a fresh shrimp assorted chawanmushi, and a sashimi platter for two. After adding a 10% service fee, the total came to 2475 NTD.
Set B:
Set B includes a large seafood bowl, fried oysters, shiso plum wine, dessert of the day, silky tofu soup, salmon roe, and Japanese oysters.
Large Seafood Bowl:
Visually striking, the bowl is piled high with seafood, with thickly sliced fresh sashimi that shines with vibrant colors. Every bite is rich with ocean flavors. On that day, I chose to replace the oysters with sea urchin; the sweetness and richness of the sea urchin was satisfying, but my cravings couldn’t resist ordering oysters back.
The oysters were impressively sized, with a smooth texture and the salty freshness of the sea, which combined with the burst of salmon roe provided great satisfaction. The shrimp was equally tender and sweet, paired with mildly tangy Japanese vinegared rice, making it a delightful experience.
Fried Oysters:
The breading was fried to a golden crisp, while the oysters inside remained moist and delicious, without any overcooked powderiness. Eating them alone, one can fully appreciate the oysters’ rich marine taste, and pairing them with shredded cabbage added more depth to the flavor.
Shiso Plum Wine:
Slightly sweet and tangy, with low alcohol content, it carries a faint shiso fragrance, making it refreshing and cleansing.
Dessert of the Day:
On that day, the dessert served was warabi mochi, which had a chewy texture paired with fragrant soybean powder, very satisfying.
Silky Tofu Soup:
The tofu shredded thin like hair spread through the soup, providing a gentle and delicate texture. It was an excellent starter for warming up the palate.
Customized Sashimi Rice Bowl:
I selected swordfish, golden herring, squid, anago (conger eel), and snow crab roe, paired with vinegared rice, making for a well-balanced overall flavor. The swordfish had a firm texture and moderate fat content; I particularly loved the tangy flavor of the golden herring. The anago was tender and delicate, and after brushing it with sauce, it had a subtle sweetness that blended perfectly with the vinegared rice.
Fresh Shrimp Assorted Chawanmushi:
The texture was delicate and smooth, with a rich egg flavor and sweet broth. The fresh shrimp and the sweetness of the mushrooms complemented each other, offering a warm flavor profile. Plus, there was a delicious shrimp that felt very worthwhile.
Sashimi Platter for Two:
The container for the sashimi had a cute fish shape at the bottom to hold soy sauce. The sashimi selection was rich, with thick slices, and extremely fresh. Strictly speaking, it’s just a continuation of the earlier seafood bowl, so I won’t elaborate further.
Overall, it’s a Japanese restaurant that is very attentive to ingredient selection, plating, and flavors. If you want to indulge, the restaurant has various set menus that are rich in content and generous in portions. If you're looking to budget wisely, custom rice bowls can also satisfy your cravings to the fullest.
Highly recommended to everyone!
