Popcorn chicken, abbreviated as chicken chop, is a common national snack in Taiwan and is a type of fried chicken. The usual method involves marinating chicken breast in sauce for flavor, then coating it with breadcrumbs, batter, or sweet potato flour before deep-frying. After frying, it is sprinkled with pepper salt. The vast majority are consumed by placing the chicken chop into an oil-proof paper bag, and some are cut open before being placed inside.
Although similar snacks, such as salt and crispy chicken and other fried meat products, have existed for a long time, the fried chicken chop is considered to be a relatively new snack in Taiwan, generally believed to have appeared in the market around the late 1990s. The Taiwan Council of Agriculture's Animal Industry Division mentioned in the news materials for its 2006 Taiwan Golden Chicken Chop Carnival series that: "Through investigation by the Council of Agriculture and the Golden Chicken Chop Special Search Team, we found the originator of the Golden Chicken Chop - Mr. Zheng Guangrong of Zheng Gu Ma Chicken Chop."
