When in Chiayi, you have to try chicken rice!
I originally wanted to eat at another place but found out it doesn't open until four o'clock.
I opened Google and selected the one with the most reviews (over 11,000).
The rating is quite good (4.2), so I decided to try Democracy Turkey Chicken Rice.
I thought it wouldn't be too crowded during lunchtime on a weekday,
but when I drove closer, I saw a lot of people queuing!
The shop has a parking lot (diagonally across from the shop),
but there aren't many parking spaces.
However, because it's a snack place, the turnover rate is quite fast,
so waiting for a spot might not take too long.
Fortunately, we were lucky today and found a parking space ❤️.
There were about two groups ahead of us in line,
so we could take the menu and decide what to order in advance.
The turnover rate is really fast; our group of four hadn't even finished writing our orders before we could be seated.
The chicken rice is fragrant and not too oily (nor too dry).
Even when eating a large bowl, it doesn’t feel greasy at all.
(A guy from our group thought the large bowl portion was still a bit insufficient.)
But since we wanted to try a few different dishes, not everyone ordered the large chicken rice!
The vegetables were also very fresh, and we chose sweet potato leaves which were delicious 😋.
The mashed potato salad was also quite good and refreshing.
I found the pork liver to not have a strong flavor,
and it was not too powdery, which was impressive (I usually don’t eat pork liver).
The spicy duck blood had a lot of flavor (but it wasn't too spicy).
The marinated tofu serves about three pieces, which felt a bit small (but it's only $15?).
The best part was the crispy fried shallots.
They were really fragrant, no wonder they sell jars of fried shallots on the menu.
Additionally, the sauce for the boiled vegetables was exceptional.
I thought boiled vegetables were usually bland,
but today’s sweet potato leaves were really delicious 🤤.
Most people seemed to still feel a bit hungry after eating the small bowl,
so we ordered another serving of chicken rice and also had oyster soup.
To our surprise, there were quite a few oysters in the soup!
Having eaten at so many chicken rice places in Chiayi, I feel this one is quite memorable.
I think I would come back again on my next visit to Chiayi!
The total bill for four people was about 405,
which means each person spent around 100, which is quite good ❤️.
