This time I came to "Jia Yao Chicken Rice Shop" and ordered the Nanyang Bak Kut Teh (135 NT) and a small bowl of turkey rice (50 NT). My overall impression after eating is that the soup is okay, but I really wouldn't recommend the turkey rice.
First, let’s talk about the turkey rice. It's completely different from the version in Chiayi, which is soaked in chicken oil and bursting with aroma. The rice here is drier, the shredded turkey meat is sparse, and the texture is a bit tough, also not salty enough. The chili sauce in the picture is something I added myself; it didn’t come with the dish, which made the overall flavor a bit more bland.
As for the Bak Kut Teh, the soup is drinkable, has a slight herbal flavor, and isn’t too salty, but the ingredients are really lacking. There are only two or three pieces of pork ribs, a piece of radish, and something that looks like a small intestine (not quite sure). The taste of the soup is acceptable, but given the price, the portions are really small.
This bowl of rice and the bowl of soup cost a total of 185 NT, and I didn’t feel particularly satisfied after the meal. At this price point, there should be other options in Tainan.
However, there were actually quite a few customers in the shop, and they seemed to be getting a lot of takeout orders. It was raining that day, yet the business was still stable. Maybe everyone's tastes are different from mine, or perhaps I'm just more sensitive to prices?
In summary, I wouldn’t recommend the turkey rice, but the Bak Kut Teh is worth a try.
