As someone who absolutely loves three treasures rice in Taiwan, I of course have to indulge in various types of roast meat rice when in Hong Kong. This is because my friends from Hong Kong told me that it’s very rare to find authentic roast meat like that in Hong Kong while in Taiwan.
Yesterday, I ate at the Michelin-starred Gan Pai, and today I’m going for a more local version at Zai Hing. Just looking at the price difference, the cheapest takeaway at Gan Pai for one person could cost over 200 Hong Kong dollars to really feel full, while at Zai Hing, it only costs about a third of that. However, the styles at both places are quite different.
Gan Pai focuses on roast goose and offers more service, which is why there’s a service charge. Zai Hing's service is a bit more straightforward; in simple terms, the staff are pretty direct, and you don’t need to feel ignored—you just need to make sure they heard you when you called. 😂
As for the roast meat, I feel that Hong Kong’s roast meat isn't as overly moist as some of the offerings in Taiwan. If the skin is meant to be crispy, they usually do that well, and the scallion sauce is very fragrant. However, in terms of taste, I think it's not too different from Taiwan's roast meat, but I am just used to the meat quality in Taiwan.
