The skin of the meatball is translucent and has a soft, chewy texture. The filling is savory and hearty, and the special sauce has a balanced sweet and salty flavor. The broth of the Four Gods Soup is milky white and fragrant, and the pork intestines are well-prepared, giving the overall flavor a traditional and classic taste.
The atmosphere inside the store is relaxed, attracting many diners, especially lovers of meatballs, allowing one to feel the local特色.
The service staff are friendly and able to provide basic dining suggestions, overall service efficiency is good.
Located in Beidou, Changhua, "Rouyuan Sheng" is a well-known local snack shop that is often listed as one of the must-try places in Beidou. This time, I ordered the two most classic combinations – meatballs and herbal soup, and the overall flavor belongs to the traditional old taste.
The meatball has a semi-transparent skin, made by steaming and then frying, giving it a texture that is between soft and chewy, not too heavy. The filling is mainly made of pork pieces, combined with diced bamboo shoots and a hint of pepper aroma, making it salty and flavorful. The special sauce blends a balance of sweetness, saltiness, and garlic aroma, making the sauce smooth and well-flavored, ensuring that the entire meatball is not overly greasy.
The herbal soup is a standard Taiwanese traditional soup, with a milky white and fragrant broth that carries a light medicinal aroma. The pig intestines are cleaned properly, without any fishy smell, and have a soft texture with a bit of chewiness; the additional lotus seeds and job's tears are also stewed until tender, making the overall soup smooth and comforting.
Overall, "Beidou Rouyuan Sheng" represents the local flavors without being overly flashy. With its chewy meatball skin and fragrant filling, along with the heartwarming herbal soup, this place is definitely worth a try.
# Open for Business During the New Year
When I went to eat, I specifically asked the store owner, and they said they would be open during the New Year, but their hours would be slightly different from normal. I initially wanted to post their holiday hours when creating a recommendation, but surprisingly, someone else had already done that.
There are really quite a few options on Beidou Meatball Street, and this "Dou Nan Meatball Shop" is a place I’ve eaten at twice; it’s relatively good among the shops on this street. Their meatballs are on the softer, chewier side, with a skin that isn’t too thick and a generous amount of meat filling, giving a satisfying feeling of fullness. The overall flavor is good; however, if you prefer a slightly crispy skin, you may not enjoy this place as much.
They have two types of chili sauce in the shop, but to be honest, the chili sauce isn’t very spicy, and it’s incredibly salty. You need to be a bit careful when using it; I recommend adding just a little because it has limited effect on enhancing flavor and can actually make the meatballs overly salty. Speaking of soup, I ordered the four herb soup, which has a decent portion. The small intestines are well-prepared, without any fishy or weird taste, which I appreciate. However, I personally think it resembles ginger small intestine soup more, as the ginger slices are plentiful, making the flavor of the four herb soup less prominent. The soup itself is still quite warming and makes for a nice combination.
Overall, this meatball shop is a standard choice, especially if you like the meatball skin to be a bit softer and chewier. However, because the entire street is filled with meatball shops and competition is fierce, there are actually quite a few others that are similarly good. I recommend trying several if you have time; you might discover some surprises. As for this shop, the solid meatball filling and clean small intestine soup are probably what would bring people back to eat here!
You must not miss a meatball shop when you come to Beigang, especially this meatball shop is among the top ones on Google reviews, so make a pilgrimage!
Meatballs - 2 pieces per serving - 50 - The skin is a little chewy but soft and easy to break. The sauce is thick, spicy and slightly spicy. The bamboo shoots are cube-shaped and crispy, and the meat is fairly lean. Overall, I think it's okay. Maybe because I don't particularly like meatballs, so I can't feel anything special about it.
