The overall presentation of the dishes shows a coexistence of brilliance and mediocrity. Some dishes, such as the pork belly with fermented red bean and the sweet-sour lotus root, are highly recommended, while the sweet and sour ribs and crab roe noodles are relatively ordinary.
The restaurant is located next to Yu Garden, offering a beautiful view and an elegant atmosphere, making it a great choice for dining and taking photos.
Located next to Yuyuan Garden, Lulango is a restaurant that features Jiangnan cuisine and scenic views. From the window, one can see the ancient pavilions and serene scenery with leisurely strolling visitors; whether day or night, the visual enjoyment is a significant draw of this place. However, this dining experience feels more like a “feast of both exquisite and ordinary” Jiangnan banquet—a stunning environment, yet the dishes vary widely, with highlights and mediocrity each accounting for half.
Scallion Oil Chicken
As a classic Jiangnan dish, Scallion Oil Chicken has a fragrant oil flavor and fresh taste. The chicken is adequately tender, and the scallion flavor is prominent.
Cranberry Sweet and Sour Ribs
Sweet and sour ribs are one of the signature dishes of Jiangnan cuisine, but this rendition is rather weak, with an unimpressive balance of sour and sweet, lacking the fragrance of cranberries, and overall falls into the "average safe choice" category.
Osmanthus Sugar Lotus Root
This dish performs very consistently. The sugar lotus root is soft and glutinous, with a naturally sweet osmanthus aroma that isn't overly sticky, presenting distinct layers of fragrance. It is a very typical and successful Jiangnan dessert. Highly recommended!
Jiangnan Three Shrimp Lion’s Head
The lion’s head dumpling is soft, with a hint of shrimp flavor, but overall, it's on the bland side. If you're expecting a strong seafood taste or intense meat aroma, it might feel a bit insipid.
Four Happiness Fermented Red Braised Pork
The meat is tender, with a clear distinction between fat and lean parts. The fermented red bean sauce is flavorful, melting in the mouth without being greasy. This braised pork has rich layers, making it one of the few dishes in this meal that truly exemplifies "Jiangnan depth and delicacy." Definitely worth a try!
Crab Roe Noodles
A limited edition with only 20 servings available daily. Handpicked crab, but its flavor is unexpectedly average. The crab aroma is not prominent, and the noodles absorb the sauce moderately, making it somewhat disappointing given the expectations. 🦀
Colorful Nine-Square Osmanthus Rice Cake
The presentation in a nine-square format is eye-catching, with both sweet and savory bites. The texture is soft, making it a visually stunning dessert. However, some flavors are too heavy with artificial essence.
Crab Roe Soup Dumplings
The aroma of crab roe is clear, with abundant soup; the skin is thin but doesn't break easily, making it one of the better items on the table. While not extraordinarily stunning, it's worth trying!
Scallion Oil Shredded Radish and Jellyfish
The jellyfish is crunchy, the shredded radish sweet, and the aroma of scallion oil is elegant, making it a very good cold dish.
Strong Crab Flavored Duck Tongue
The intense fermentation flavor paired with duck tongue is smooth and crunchy, but the acceptability of the aroma varies. Personally, I didn't like it much.
Spicy Flavored Duck
The aroma is distinct, but the flavor is somewhat conservative. The duck meat's tenderness is satisfactory, and the spices don’t overpower the taste, making it a “can eat but don’t need to order” type.
Chrysanthemum Pu-erh Tea (Pot)
With a gentle chrysanthemum aroma and a non-bitter Pu-erh, it balances the oil and sweetness in the meal perfectly, making it an unassuming yet essential part of this meal.
The greatest advantage of Lulango is:
Great scenery, elegant ambiance, and exquisite plating. If you're looking for a dining experience, a photo opportunity, or a place to take elders out to eat, this is an elegant choice. However, if you are purely seeking flavors, there are many other local restaurants that serve more precise Jiangnan cuisine.
