Although the variety of dishes is rich, most of the dishes perform ordinarily and lack elements that are truly amazing. The freshness and flavor of some ingredients need improvement, and the desserts and beverages are on the sweeter side.
The restaurant has a nostalgic atmosphere, which may be a charm for those who love nostalgic vibes.
【Foodholic Niko @ Taipei】
Once again, it's a restaurant I haven't heard of or eaten at in a long time—"West Steak." It was a very luxurious restaurant for my student days, but I've visited it less frequently after entering the workforce. This time, due to a colleague's gathering, we chose the "West Steak Taipei Chongqing South Store," which is nearby the office.
First, a conclusion:
It feels like dining in a nostalgic atmosphere? The food is just average; although it's not bad, I could point out a little dissatisfaction with almost every dish. So, it's not a restaurant I would actively choose.
Appetizer - Scallops and Fresh Shrimp with Curry Yogurt Sauce
The fresh shrimp and scallops are both very small and taste rather ordinary. They also included sliced kiwi, and the only thing I found delicious was the curry yogurt sauce, haha.
Salad - Beef Ham Lettuce Salad
The lettuce portion is quite generous and relatively fresh. The dressing is Caesar dressing, which is okay, but I found the sliced beef ham just average—not really tasty beef.
Appetizer - Baked Mushrooms + Cube Bread
This dish is a perennial item at West Steak. The mushrooms have a low presence, and it feels more like eating baked mashed potatoes. The flavor is quite average, and the bread itself is not very crispy, which together fails to impress.
Appetizer Drink - Lemon Shaker
It's quite sour and refreshingly chilled. You can refill it.
Soup - Clam Chowder
This seems to be a new item. The clam chowder is topped with four small clams, which shockingly are cold, and they are dry with little juice. They don't taste very fresh, and I only ate two before stopping. The chowder itself isn't impressive either, and I left it unfinished.
(My colleague mentioned the pumpkin soup is not bad.)
Main Course - Surf and Turf
It consists of a grilled chicken thigh and grilled fish. Personally, I think the fish is quite good; it’s topped with something that resembles crushed tofu, which adds flavor, and there's no fishy smell. It pairs well with the sweet and sour sauce on the side. The chicken thigh is a bit dry, seeming like it didn’t retain the juices, and it has a flavor that requires sauce to mask it, which I don’t really like.
Dessert - Caramel Crème Brûlée
Crème brûlée is usually a safe choice, and it tastes pretty good, but it's quite sweet!
Drink - Milk Cap Red Milk Tea
The hot milk tea has a salty milk cap on top, and it tastes good, quite rich, but it's also very sweet, so I couldn’t finish it all.
