This 60-year-old shop has been on my to-eat list for a long time. It’s a hidden street snack near the city market. Every time I try to buy it, I always come up empty-handed. Today I found out that it’s actually open. I’m super excited and I don’t care what I have. I was already carrying my lunch, so I rushed forward to buy one for afternoon tea!
The boss was kind and friendly. I asked him about his business hours and found out that it opens at 11:30 but closes the stall when it’s sold out. No wonder I couldn’t find it when I went shopping after get off work before.

The portions prepared by the boss seem to be a lot, but it is understandable why they are sold out in advance. There is really an endless stream of customers. Many customers even made reservations in advance, and some customers bought 5 or 10 pieces as soon as they came. I Buying one is really too petty 😂 If you want to eat, I suggest you come at noon!
Each flavor is $40/piece, buy 15 and get 1 free. There are 5 flavors: original, red bean, mung bean paste, sesame and peanut, and preserved vegetables. All are vegetarian.
It was my first time shopping and I didn’t know what flavor to buy, so I asked the boss to recommend it. The boss immediately put an original flavor into my hand at lightning speed, saying "If you only buy one, it will be the original flavor!"
Original fermented rice cake $40
The original flavor has no fillings, just plain flour. The cake is very chewy and solid but does not make people feel dry. Personally, I think it is similar to the aroma of Hsinchu water cake (has anyone tried it? Hahaha). I tasted a hint of fermented wine, a bit sweet~
To be honest, I can’t say there’s anything special about it. When I took the first bite, I thought, “Huh? Is that it?” But as I took the bite, I felt the aroma of fermented rice flour and fermented rice. It was so mouth-watering that I couldn’t stop eating it.

If you do not want to refrigerate and reheat it, it is recommended to eat it while it is hot. It will become a little hard after cooling.
The paper bag is marked with heating and storage methods. It can be stored in the refrigerator for 7-10 days and in the freezer for 30-45 days. It can be heated in an electric pot, microwave, pan, or oven.
Overall, I think the fermented rice cake is a very suitable snack for afternoon tea. I recommend that people who like flour products like me can buy it and try it!
