Shishi Food Room in Longchang Village, Donghe Township, Taitung, was established by a group of young Amis people. Inspired by traditional tribal dietary practices, they create rice dishes with local rice and seasonal ingredients that reflect the characteristics of the tribe. The interior space is secluded and not crowded, simple and comfortable, making one feel very at ease.
During my visit, I sampled two of the more popular main dishes: the Oyako Don (parent-child rice bowl) and the Miso Chicken Set. The Oyako Don features tender chicken paired with smooth egg sauce and onions, served over fragrant and sweet rice. With one bite, the rich flavor of the egg blends with the chicken juices and the sweetness of the onions; the rice is perfectly soft yet firm, making it very appetizing. Although the sauce has a slight saltiness, the overall flavor is not overpowering.
The Miso Chicken Set, on the other hand, is an alternative option: thigh meat marinated in miso sauce and grilled to a golden color, retaining its juiciness and with a slightly crisp outer layer. This set comes with seasonal side dishes and soup; the combination is well thought out, and the savory aroma of the miso is balanced and not greasy, enhancing the overall dining experience significantly.
Overall, Shishi Food Room is suitable for those who dislike heavy oil and salt and seek local flavors. If you want to find a reassuring meal that combines culture and taste by the seaside in Taitung, this is a place worth considering. It is also highly recommended for those who enjoy exploring food origins and seasonal changes.
