Foodholic Nako @ Osaka, Japan

"The Teppan Shrine Main Store" is located in the Shinsaibashi area of Osaka. We initially planned to eat at Mino-ya Okonomiyaki, but encountered early closing hours due to the New Year holiday. Not having done any further research, we stumbled upon this intriguingly named Teppan Shrine while wandering nearby.

Teppan Shrine offers a common variety of yakitori, but instead of grilling over charcoal, they use an iron plate cooking method. Almost all hot dishes in the restaurant (besides the yakitori, they also serve fried noodles, omelet rice, grilled tofu, etc.) are cooked on an iron plate.

The dining rule requires each person to order at least 5 skewers of yakitori and 1 drink. There is also a charge of ¥330 per person for table-side appetizers.

We ordered 10 skewers of yakitori, 1 main dish, 1 bowl of soup, and 2 drinks, totaling ¥5225, which equals about NT$600 per person.

Thoughts on the meal:

  • Miso Soup: Started off tasting good, but ended up a bit salty by the end.
  • Omelet Rice: Cooked on an iron plate, filled with tomato sauce fried rice. The tomato flavor was strong and very tasty; the rice had a slight chewiness.
  • Duck Yakitori: The skewer I had wasn't great due to a fishy taste.
  • Chicken Yakitori and Pork Yakitori: Both were very good, with tender meat that still had a nice chew.
  • Salmon Yakitori: Topped with salmon roe, it was very refreshing, and the salmon was also tender.
  • King Oyster Mushroom Yakitori: Very fragrant upon biting into it and quite juicy.
  • Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Yakitori: Average, possibly because it was a bit cold when we ate it; better to enjoy it hot.
  • Mini Hamburg: Quite small but tasty, with a cute Japanese flag stuck on top.
  • Shumai: Like small pork dumplings topped with mayonnaise, a bit ordinary and slightly greasy.

Overall, the dishes were on the salty side, needing a drink to balance it out, or they might feel a bit heavy.

It’s worth mentioning that due to the restaurant’s busy atmosphere, there was a mix-up with our order. We ordered shumai at the beginning, but they were never delivered. After reminding them once, it still didn’t come; it was only after a second reminder that the staff began preparing it, which cost them 0.5 stars.
