Near Yonghe Park No. 4, there is my favorite douhua shop in the Twin Cities—Douyun.
With thick and rich-tasting soybean milk douhua, for someone like me who only eats soybean milk douhua and completely avoids syrupy douhua, Douyun is a dream-like ideal.
The soybean milk can be ordered unsweetened, and the ingredients themselves still have some sweetness, so adjustments can be made based on personal preference.
My most common combination is unsweetened soybean milk douhua + taro + coconut milk taro balls. The coconut milk taro balls are creamy and delicate, with a strong taro flavor, complemented by the rich aroma of coconut milk. The taro itself is soft and dense, with the sweetness well-controlled, not overshadowing the fragrance of the soybean milk.
The douhua itself is not the kind that melts in your mouth instantly and has almost no presence, but a solid version with thickness and texture. Each bite reveals the original flavor and aroma of the yellow soybeans (sometimes black beans). The soybean milk has a rich aroma with a natural bean taste, completely different from commercially available, heavily diluted, and overly filtered soybean milk; one sip makes it clear what real ingredients are.
In addition to douhua, Douyun also sells large bottles of soybean milk and douhua soymilk buns among other homemade products. If you like them, it's perfect to take one home. Although the overall space is not large, it is clean and tidy, with some indoor seating and a few outdoor seats, making it suitable for quietly enjoying a bowl of cool douhua on a summer afternoon.
If you're also a fan of soybean milk douhua, or simply want to have a traditional dessert that is made with real ingredients and isn't overly sweet, this shop is really worth a visit. Please, everyone who hasn't eaten here yet, come and try it!
