After finishing the清安意麵 at Yanshui, it's almost natural to walk next door to the Yingfeng Ice Dessert Shop. This route of moving from one snack to another seems to have become a fixed itinerary. Yingfeng Ice Dessert Shop is a typical old-fashioned ice shop, with a sign and storefront that carries a sense of history. Walking in feels like returning to the atmosphere of early Tainan's ice dessert shops, with minimal decoration that instead adds to its charm.
This time, I ordered the classic pudding red bean ice. When it was served, the portion was quite satisfying; a generous mound of shaved ice topped with red beans and a whole pudding on top, giving off a nostalgic vibe. The red beans were cooked to a creamy texture but not overly mushy, a bit on the sweet side, but balanced perfectly when eaten with the ice. The pudding had a traditional texture, somewhat firm with an eggy aroma, unlike the popular softer versions today, which actually makes it more memorable.
The shaved ice itself had a medium level of fineness; it wasn’t the fluffy snow ice type but rather the traditional crushed ice texture of old ice dessert shops. It felt refreshing and direct upon entry, especially noticeable in the weather of Tainan. The syrup was sweet but not overly cloying; when combined with the sweetness of the red beans, the overall flavor was very simple yet made you want to keep taking bite after bite.
After enjoying the 意麵 and then a bowl of ice, my body instantly cooled down, and I felt much more relaxed. The remarkable thing about Yingfeng Ice Dessert Shop lies not in the variety but in the timeless flavor that has coexisted with the old streets for a long time. When visiting Yanshui, if you’ve already had the 意麵, then taking a few more steps for a bowl of pudding red bean ice is almost the perfect way to finish off the meal.
