"Chill Tofu" is located near Ximen District, about a 4-minute walk from Exit 6, on Neijiang Street. This area has a whole block of street-side snack shops, but each shop has a small semi-outdoor seating area, perfect for a short break to enjoy some snacks.
Stinky tofu is divided into three types: traditional, chive sauce, and salty crispy. The small portion (6 pieces) of the first two types is $80, and the large portion (12 pieces) is $120.
We originally ordered a small portion of traditional stinky tofu, but later realized that the small portion didn't offer much value. After seeing many reviews saying that chive sauce stinky tofu was delicious, we debated for a long time and then asked the owner if we could change our order to a large portion, half traditional and half chive sauce. The owner was so considerate and said yes!
P.S. The owner is very beautiful and has a warm smile, with great approachability!
First, let’s talk about the appearance. The entire serving of stinky tofu is beautifully arranged. If you want it spicy, a little chili sauce is added on top, which I think is perfect for taking photos; it looks really stunning!
Now, onto the flavor. The stinky tofu isn’t too stinky, and the crispiness is decent; it doesn’t scrape your mouth. The kimchi is sufficiently sour, refreshing, and delicious. A bite of stinky tofu followed by a bite of kimchi is just right. The only downside is that the stinky tofu isn’t hot enough; however, this is also an advantage since you won’t burn your mouth when you take a big bite.
One thing worth mentioning is that I need to report that the chive sauce stinky tofu does not match the pictures! How come there are even more chives than shown in the photo? The chive sauce stinky tofu is heaped with chives, and I didn’t expect chives to pair so well with stinky tofu. The combination of stinkiness adds a refreshing crunch and it’s quite a unique pairing!
If, like me, you struggle with choices and still have room in your stomach, I recommend opting for the large size and asking the owner to split it half and half.
