The "Dongmaijiu Grilled Corn" at the Dongdaemun Night Market in Hualien is probably the most famous grilled corn stall here. Whether it's online reviews or the crowd it draws, it consistently ranks at the top. During my two-day visit to Hualien, I went to the Dongdaemun Night Market both nights; on the first day, which was a Friday, there were quite a few people in line, while the second day, being a weekday, I was able to buy it right away without waiting.
In terms of pricing, a piece of grilled corn costs around 100 to 120 NTD, which I have to say is a bit expensive. If I weren't traveling here specifically, I probably wouldn't spend that much on corn. But when traveling, it's okay to indulge a little, especially since this stall has such a good reputation that makes it feel worth trying.
They offer two textures of grilled corn: one is soft and tender, while the other has some chewiness to it. I chose the soft one this time, and it was really delicious; the sauce completely soaked into the corn kernels, bringing out a savory taste that's rich without being overly salty, with a good depth of flavor. If you like something with a bit of chew, the chewy version should be good too; I can try that another day.
As for consumption advice, if you see a long line, I think it's unnecessary to wait, because no matter how good grilled corn is, it’s not something you absolutely have to eat. But if there aren’t many people, or if you're just standing nearby watching the corn grill and look delicious, then it's worth buying one to give it a try.
