When I can't think of what to eat, Sukiya is definitely the best brainless choice. The location is convenient, the food options are simple and clear, with set meals that have meat, vegetables, and soup, stable food quality, a bright dining environment, and a quick ordering and delivery process. All of these factors make people want to come back to eat.
But today I might give a lower score.
First, let's talk about the main dishes.
🚩 Hot Melty Cheese Curry (Medium Bowl) $139
This dish has always been my favorite staple. Their curry is very delicious, with a rich Japanese curry sauce. It's very thoughtful of them to use pork broth, allowing me, who doesn't eat beef, to have another option (otherwise, almost all the dishes in this restaurant are beef, which is frustrating 😫). Additionally, with cheddar cheese sticks that melt into the curry sauce due to the heat, it's really tasty when scooped up with rice, creating a wonderfully stretchy texture.
🚩 Vegetable Set Meal $40
Their set meal is genuinely cheap; for $40, you can get a plate of fresh water spinach and a bowl of miso soup. The water spinach is really good, with fresh green tender stems and the aroma of garlic; it’s crunchy and very satisfying, a perfect match with rice. The miso soup is just the usual kind, but it's worth the price.
🚩 Grilled Chicken (A La Carte) $120
I really don't understand this a la carte option. Clearly, ordering beef alone is only $70, and you get a large plate of beef, while the teriyaki chicken thigh I ordered costs almost double the price, and when it arrived, it was an extremely small portion! So disappointing. Moreover, the chicken was inexplicably soaked in a pool of super salty sauce, making every bite unbearably salty. I really didn't like it. Poor review 👎 It was so expensive and tasted so bad; I genuinely regret adding this dish.
🚩 Onsen Egg $25
Quite standard; it's pretty good when cracked over the rice bowl, but I just put it directly on the curry sauce, and it brings a different flavor.
Overall, the dining experience was acceptable, but that grilled chicken a la carte was astonishingly disappointing. It's really not worth it, and it was almost twice as expensive as the beef. Frustrating!
