Located near the Dongmen MRT station, "Toast Livia" is a restaurant specializing in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. The decor, complemented by wooden elements and greenery, exudes a strong exotic and relaxed atmosphere. This area offers a rich variety of dining options, and "Toast Livia" indeed provides unique flavor choices with its foreign cuisine, making it a great spot for adventurous diners.
First and foremost, I recommend the "Classic Shakshuka."
The dish features a red sauce base made from slow-cooked tomatoes and onions, with poached eggs added and simmered until the white is cooked and the yolks are slightly runny. It is served with homemade roasted pita bread and hummus. This dish is truly flavorful; the sweetness and acidity of the red sauce are well-balanced, the onions are tender and flavorful, and the yolk mixes with the sauce making it rich and smooth. Scooping it up with the pita creates a fantastic layered experience. The hummus is also smooth and delicate, adding a nutty aroma and a feeling of fullness to the meal. The only little downside is that there isn't enough pita; the sauce is so delicious that it runs out quickly, leaving only a fork to enjoy the rest, which is a bit unsatisfying. If they could provide a few more pieces, it would show extra thoughtfulness!
The "Greek Hazelnut Pesto" sounds creative, but unfortunately, it tastes a bit bland. The pasta is cooked just right, and the hazelnut aroma is present, but the overall seasoning is on the conservative side. It lacks the expected salty and intense flavor of Greek cuisine or the spiciness that a pesto should have. It’s not bad, but it’s somewhat forgettable.
For dessert, the "Tiramisu" is not bad in flavor, but the portion is simply too small. When it arrives, you’re almost taken aback by how little there is—almost a single bite, resembling a mini dessert sample. The texture is dense, the wine aroma is moderate, and the taste is a decent tiramisu, but it doesn’t measure up in terms of price and expectations. 😕
Overall, "Toast Livia" is a comfortable environment with a menu rich in exotic flavors. If you're looking for a small meal, a photo-op, or an experience of different cultural flavors, it’s a great choice. However, some dishes are somewhat ordinary, and there is a slight discrepancy between price and portion size. It is recommended to focus on main dishes; newcomers should definitely try the "Shakshuka" to appreciate the charm of Middle Eastern flavors, and then decide if they want to return to explore other items.
