Located in downtown Taitung, Shifu Soup Dumplings may lead one to think that their main offering is soup dumplings, but upon stepping inside, you'll find that many customers actually order the Japanese donburi rice bowls. This time, I chose the beef donburi.

The first impression when the beef donburi was served was the enticing aroma. The sauce has a distinct sweet and savory Japanese flavor, leaning towards that of sukiyaki. The sauce itself is quite tasty, with a noticeable sweetness that is not overwhelming, making it enjoyable with rice. However, the overall key aspect—the amount of meat—was indeed on the low side. The thin slices of beef were scattered atop the rice and appeared to be insufficient, which might leave those who enjoy hearty meat portions feeling a bit empty.

The portion of rice, on the other hand, was relatively ample, even bordering on excessive, which might be a challenge for those with smaller appetites. If the amount of beef could be increased, the overall balance of the bowl would be improved. The sauce mixed with the white rice creates a pleasant flavor, with a hint of sweetness and a faint onion aroma that prevents the dish from feeling monotonous.

Although I ordered donburi this time, the restaurant still offers soup dumplings and steamed dumplings, with the occasional sight of steaming baskets releasing enticing aromas. I might want to try those next time.

Overall, if you're looking for a simple, quick meal with a touch of Japanese flavor in Taitung, this place is an acceptable choice. However, if you want to enjoy a more satisfying portion of meat or are somewhat picky, this might not be the right fit.
