Fenchihu is well-known for its草仔粿 (a type of rice cake) and donuts.
🌟 The草仔粿 is really soft and chewy, with a savory flavor. Please leave a message if you want to join the queue.
"Street End Grandma's草仔粿" has always been famous in Fenchihu. I’ve been here a few times, and I heard that it either wasn’t open or was sold out. This time, I had the chance to try it, and later I found out that they also sell it in Anping, Tainan. It’s hilarious!
"Street End Grandma's草仔粿" produces 200 pieces every 1.5 hours. Once one batch is sold out, you have to wait for the next batch. You need to be mentally prepared to wait for a purchase. We happened to catch it right as it was coming out of the steamer, so we were lucky to get it without waiting long. They have a blackboard written by hand to show the steaming times for customer reference.
The menu offers 8 flavors, each costing 💰35: meat and vegetarian grass rice cakes, taro cakes, sweet potato bamboo shoots, shredded taro, red bean, purple rice with peanuts, and sesame.
However, I unexpectedly discovered during the preparation process that the草仔粿 is heated with plastic bags, leading to some doubt about whether this is safe to do.
(Among all plastic products, only those made of the 5th type of PP material can be used for microwave heating. However, you must ensure that it is labeled "microwave safe" before use; other plastic materials are generally not recommended.)
Let's dig in!
The meat草仔粿 costs 💰35.
The filling includes pork, preserved vegetables, mushrooms, and shrimp, which are all very generous. When hot, the skin has a great stickiness, and when it cools down, it becomes chewy and delicious. It’s fantastic when hot and also great when cold. I highly recommend it!
Thoughts: Previously, I either found it closed or sold out. This time, waiting 15 minutes was quite acceptable; it's really tasty. However, it seems like you can call ahead to reserve.
If you prioritize the food: the草仔粿 is delicious.
If you prioritize the environment: it’s a roadside stall.
If you prioritize parking: there is parking in Fenchihu.
If you prioritize bathrooms: none available.
If you prioritize queueing: you will need to queue, but it seems like reservations can be made.
If you prioritize service: it’s average.
If you prioritize cost-effectiveness: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
