📍Location: Shanghai, China

Today I came to eat at the Michelin one-star 🌟 restaurant "Ren He Guan," known for its traditional Shanghai cuisine and claimed to be an old brand with authentic Shanghai flavors.

The Zhao Jia Bang location is the main restaurant that earned its star, and it’s necessary to book online a few months in advance to secure a reservation. At the Jing'an Temple location, it’s not as tough, but it’s still very popular. The doors open at 11:00 AM, and I arrived at 11:05 AM, with several tables already seated.

The entire restaurant is styled with a Republic of China theme, and the staff are dressed in period clothing, which adds to the atmosphere. The seating is in private booths, offering a personal touch, and the dining style is set meals served one dish at a time, making it great for gatherings of friends.

Upon being seated, a thick menu is presented to us. We ordered almost all the dishes recommended online, with detailed descriptions in the pictures. First-time visitors unsure of what to order can refer to those.

The most famous dish here is the crab meat rice!
¥199 per serving, suitable for 1-2 people, each person can expect to have about two small bowls. The ingredients blend the delicious essence of the female crab's roe, male crab's paste, and crab meat 🤤 paired with stone pot rice.
For every table that orders this dish, a staff member will assist in mixing the crab essence with the rice and serving it into your bowl. Their technique is quite nimble, and there’s a bit of performance in the process, making you swallow in anticipation while waiting!
Watching the golden crab paste being stirred into the plump rice is truly soothing, and it tastes amazing when you finally dig in! The crab flavor is rich and layered, and the rice is cooked to perfection, each grain distinct. This dish deserves its top recommendation on the menu; if you dine at Ren He Guan, this dish is a must-order!

Other dishes are also quite unique, and overall, I recommend dining here. The ambiance is stylishly decorated. Although I didn’t love every dish, they all have their own characteristics and are well-crafted, with excellent service. If you’re looking to eat something good, consider this place—it’s a reasonably priced Michelin option that can easily earn stars 🌟.

Additionally, a little reminder: if you plan to dine here, it’s crucial to make a reservation. If you don’t, you need to arrive as soon as the restaurant opens. We visited on a weekday around noon, and by the time we finished dining at about 12:30 PM, there were already over twenty groups waiting outside. Time is valuable while traveling, so it’s best not to spend too much time in line!

Waiting area downstairs
The interior decoration is very unique and quite impressive.
The seating is in a booth style.

There is also a small stage, but I don't know if a performance program will be arranged.
The bowls and dishes that you would only see in court dramas have appeared.
Prunus mume soup given away as part of an in-store event.
The translation of the provided text to English is: "Letting Go (¥40) Seasonal fried vegetables with chicken fat. This name is really good, sacrificing other parts of the whole vegetable and only taking the tip with flower buds from each vegetable. From 20 jin of vegetables, only a small plate can be picked, which is the most nutritious and delicious part; you have to give up to gain."
This dish tastes more tender than I imagined, quite similar to stewed vegetables, but it still retains the shape of the leaves and is not completely mushy. At first, I thought it was a cold dish when it was served, but in fact, it was a hot dish that had been stir-fried, with a fragrant chicken oil aroma; it was a very unique seasoning method that I had never tasted before, and it was quite delicious. The portion is quite generous, so it's a bit too much for two people to share. When the dish cools down, the flavor of the chicken oil feels a bit greasy, making it a dish that should be eaten hot.
The explanation of the dish "Shědé" (Letting Go).
Braised Pork Belly with Soy Sauce (¥24/person) This braised pork belly is made using black-haired pigs and is priced by serving. Since you only want to savor the flavor, you can order one portion to share and ask the staff to cut it into two pieces.
The braised pork is very beautiful with its shiny black color! Although there is a layer of white meat on top, it is very tender and doesn't feel greasy when eaten. It's not bad!
The color inside is the original hue of the pork.
Must-try crab roe rice (small portion ¥199)
The staff mixed it very evenly; you can taste the crab roe and crab meat in every bite. The rice is perfectly cooked, with each grain distinct. It's really delicious! 😋
Menu
Luo Chun Ge Crab Meat Pan-Fried Buns (¥99) These pan-fried buns, which are quite expensive, are very large in size, and you'll really feel full after eating them. If you have many dishes you want to try, you should consider this one carefully.
The bottom of the pan-fried buns is fried until crispy.
After eating Sheng Jian Bao (pan-fried pork bun), I am even more certain that I don't really like the ones with too thick skin. The thick dough distracts me and prevents me from truly savoring the delicious crab meat. Additionally, the filling is rather bland, so even though it's packed with crab meat, I still can't taste its flavor and texture very well. I find this dish quite ordinary and do not recommend it. 👎
Huadiao Plum Shrimp (¥53) A cold dish filled with the aroma of wine and the sweet and sour taste of plum. The wine flavor is quite strong, and the sweet and sour seasoning is just right. Personally, I really like it; it's very appetizing. Highly recommended! 👍
