As a future daughter-in-law from northern Penghu, today I accompanied my friend back to his home in Zhuwan, Xiyu. It's customary to hit up some must-visit spots! 👍🏻 At the end of this post, I have recommendations for "must-eat" places in the northern loop. Locals and tourists have slightly different tastes, so here’s some reference for everyone to consider!
Northern Loop Store Recommendations:
⭐️Lunch: Xiao Men Whale Cave - Xiao Ping's Shop (Small Tube Noodles)
⭐️Afternoon Snacks:
📍Da Guo Ye | Da Guo Ye Italian Ice Cream ✅
📍Wai'an Fishing Port | Haikou Bread ✅
📍Erkan Settlement | Shepherd’s Coffee, I Fry You Eat (Taro Cake/Sweet Potato Balls), Ice Flower Yogurt
📍Chi Dong Market | Xiao Chi Jiao Tofu Pudding, A-Li Fried Chicken
📍Da Chi North Polar Temple | Shark Meat
📍Tong Liang Ancient Banyan | Alley Cactus Ice
(Checkmarks ✅ indicate that they have reviews, and it’s continuously updated)
Haikou has now been successfully discovered by tourists and has become a popular spot on Xiyu where lines form! I want to share a bit about the meaning of "Haikou." Because it’s located in Wai'an, at the northernmost tip of Penghu, it’s also the "entrance" for the winter northeast monsoon, which is why it has such a cute name! ☺️☺️
The most famous item at Haikou is the #SaltBread. Currently, many places in Penghu make Salt Bread, but after trying various types, I still think Haikou is number one! This is mainly due to the aroma of grass-fed butter, combined with the fact that it’s not greasy or heavy. The super crispy outer crust gives way to a moist, chewy interior. The more you bite, the more flavorful it becomes, and you won’t be able to stop! 👍🏻
Whenever I visit, I always bring back at least 10! I even do group purchases for friends and family since it’s such a rare trip, and it’s not easy to get.
The menu items vary every day and are rotated periodically, giving opportunities for different meals each week and preventing people like us, who have fixed days off, from only experiencing the same flavors. You can really feel the care from the shop owner! 🧡🧡
Orders can be made through "on-site queueing" or "pre-order forms." Customers with reservations don’t have to wait in long lines. After 14:00, same-day phone reservations are accepted.
During peak tourist season, they usually sell out by around 16:30 every day. So, if you want to buy, it's best to hurry up and get your order right after lunch!
