If we talk about famous late-night cafes in Taipei, Dan Zhai is definitely one of them. I have loved it since the old location; the environment of the old house was somewhat dim, yet each corner was illuminated by warm yellow light. It was quiet and leisurely, and the cakes and drinks were quite good. I really liked the atmosphere created by the shop.
To my surprise, the new location opened much sooner than I expected! They've moved to Sanyuan Street in the Zhongzheng District. One concern people might have is transportation; the new place is a bit of a walk from the MRT station, taking about 13-15 minutes. It's recommended to take the bus or ride a scooter/car instead.
After moving, there are now savory items on the menu. I'll have to come back to try them next time!
What did I eat today? 📝
𓌉𓇋 Tieguanyin Red Heart Guava Chiffon $250
𓌉𓇋 Roasted Tea Peach Chiffon $250
𖠚ᐝ Shoshitani Roasted Tea Milk (H) $160
𖠚ᐝ Banana Milk Smoothie $170
I have always liked Dan Zhai's cake texture and fresh cream. To me, the highest quality cake can be described with the phrase "not too sweet." Overly sweet cream can be overpowering, but luckily Dan Zhai is definitely within a safe range. The cake is moist and not dry, making it a delightful combination that feels light and easy to enjoy.
The items vary daily, and you can check the shop's IG stories to see what's available. This time, the flavors were guava and peach, both paired with tea-flavored cakes. If I had to compare, the guava is marinated in plum powder, adding a tea aroma from Tieguanyin with a hint of bitterness. I think those who enjoy bold flavors might prefer the guava plum.
As for the peach, its overall flavor is sweet and fragrant, with the roasted tea being well-balanced in strength. I doubt anyone would dislike it (?!).
For drinks, there's a minimum order requirement, and the banana smoothie I ordered was quite different from what I imagined 🍌. It was a small cup, but each sip had a substantial icy texture. I personally prefer a smoother and thicker version! If you're a roasted tea fan, you must order the roasted tea milk; it's incredibly rich 🤌🏻 and the barista’s latte art is beautiful! 💕
