“小河越南平價美食館” is quite a famous Vietnamese restaurant in the Zhongshan South Road area of Tainan, known for its reasonable prices and strong flavors. It's often crowded. The menu here is quite extensive, offering a variety of noodle soups, dry noodles, rice dishes, and fried items, along with distinctive Vietnamese side dishes, providing a rich selection.
During this visit, we ordered fried eggs, roasted suckling pig rice, and stir-fried rice noodles, all of which were delicious. The fried eggs had a crispy exterior, and the yolk was not fully cooked, pairing nicely with the sauce; the roasted suckling pig rice had a crispy skin, the meat was not too dry, and the flavor was great, with a sufficient portion of rice; the stir-fried rice noodles were my favorite this time, with a strong wok hei, seasoned with a hint of sweet and spicy flavors—bold but not overwhelmingly salty, and importantly, the spiciness was quite sincere, which spicy food lovers would probably enjoy, as it had a peculiar kick that could make you feel the heat XD.
Although we didn't order it this time, the lemongrass chicken I had before is also highly recommended—flavorful, tender chicken, and similarly spicy, making it great with rice. Overall, this restaurant has the right balance of saltiness and spiciness, avoiding the kind of Vietnamese dishes that have been overly modified to the point of losing character.
In summary, 小河 is a Vietnamese restaurant with good value, offering reasonable prices and authentic flavors, especially suitable for those who enjoy bold tastes and a bit of spice. If you're interested in Vietnamese cuisine, this place should be on your list.
