I saw a chameleon from afar, and upon getting closer, I realized it was actually a taiyaki! There are many wheel cake shops in Hualien, but not many taiyaki shops. I recommend dining in so you can enjoy the slightly crispy outer layer and the warm, rich filling. The red bean paste has a Japanese red bean flavor; it's solid, not too sweet, and not runny – just right. After finishing, I immediately ordered two savory flavors (flying fish roe with cheese, and sauerkraut with sorghum sausage).
The cheese with flying fish roe (the cheese is rich and stretchy, and you can taste plenty of the flying fish roe in every bite; the bouncy texture of the roe is fantastic. Despite the hot weather, the owner is still busy cooking delicious food on the super hot griddle—it's truly hard work!
