Asakusa Unagi Sansho, located in the Asakusa shopping district, is a Japanese eel restaurant with a very typical atmosphere. The wooden decor and seating arrangement inside create a sense of calm, and the relaxed pace allows diners to take their time and truly savor their eel dishes, making for a very comfortable dining experience.
This time, we ordered the eel combination set. The set includes both kabayaki eel and shiroyaki eel, allowing us to taste two different styles of eel in one meal. The kabayaki eel is outstanding, with a perfectly balanced sweet and salty sauce, a caramelized surface that has a subtle smoky flavor, and the meat is tender and delicate. The rich fat content is not overwhelming, making it a perfect match with rice; it is the most satisfying part of the meal.
The shiroyaki eel presents a different style. Without the sauce, the freshness and the texture of the eel's fat can shine through. The meat is equally tender and fresh. However, the flavor is relatively mild, so it's recommended to pair it with soy sauce or salt to fully express its layers; otherwise, it may seem a bit bland.
Additionally, the added eel tamagoyaki was an unexpected highlight. The tamagoyaki has a fluffy and soft texture, with a strong egg aroma. When paired with the eel, it adds a nice char and richness, creating a pleasing sweet and salty flavor; it is a very well-executed side dish.
Overall, Asakusa Unagi Sansho maintains a good standard in both the cooking of the eel and the quality of the ingredients, with the kabayaki eel being especially recommended. If you are looking for a comfortable place in Asakusa to enjoy eel dishes, this is a great option.
