Today, I visited this "Gikawa Seafood Donburi Specialty Store," located near Zhongshan Station and Taipei Station, which is less than a 10-minute walk from either station. This place used to be a Japanese restaurant called "Yumi Island," which recently changed ownership, though the decor and layout haven't changed much.
P.S. While dining today, there was a guest who initially intended to eat at Yumi Island, only to discover upon entry that it had changed management.
The interior is not large, with only one row of bar seating and one row of wall seating, totaling less than 15 seats. However, there is no need to queue for dinner on weekday evenings.
The menu is mainly divided into sashimi donburi, grilled sashimi donburi, and the “Katte Don” (which allows customers to choose their desired ingredients for the donburi).
Grilled Salmon Don $360
I could smell the incredibly appetizing aroma while it was being grilled 🤤. This bowl contains a total of 7 slices of grilled salmon, each quite thick, so the portion is satisfying! The side dishes are just kelp strips, tamagoyaki, and ginger, which feels a bit lacking.
The salmon tasted quite fresh and was delicious, but the grilled aroma was slightly underwhelming, not fully realized, which is a bit of a pity. Dipping it in a bit of wasabi soy sauce enhances the flavor.
Daikichi Don $490
This includes 7 slices of seasonal sashimi, 1 piece of squid, 1 angel shrimp (which can be swapped for scallops or eel if you don’t eat shrimp, a thoughtful touch!), 1 scallop, salmon roe, flounder fin, and 1 eel.
When it was served, we really gasped in surprise because the portion was truly substantial; the donburi bowl couldn’t contain it all, requiring another plate for the sashimi, looking extremely abundant.
I only ate the fresh salmon slices and scallops from this dish; the salmon dipped in wasabi soy sauce was excellent and delicious, while the scallops were grilled, quite large, and had a decent flavor.
Both types of donburi performed at about 75-80 points, and since it's very close to home, I would be willing to visit again!
For salmon lovers, I recommend ordering the grilled salmon don, and if you enjoy a variety of sashimi, the Daikichi Don (large, medium, or small) or grilled assorted don would be great options!
