This area is a well-known fisher’s market, where there are many snacks and stalls selling various types of fish or seafood 🦞. I particularly love sea urchin, so of course I stopped at this shop when I saw it.
Without thinking, we ordered two portions of sea urchin. The price was actually a bit high; after all, when we ate in Japan, the overall experience felt much better. In Japan 🇯🇵, they open it right in front of you and clean it on the spot, then serve it to you nicely prepared. Here in the U.S., it feels like they had already prepared it for a while by the time it reaches you. However, since there were quite a few people eating there, we didn't think too much about it!
The sea urchin was indeed very fresh. It had a slight bitterness due to the variety, but you could still taste the fresh sweetness of the sea urchin. You don't even need to dip it in any sauce; you can eat the whole thing straight away!
After I finished eating, I felt a bit uncomfortable in my stomach, but my friend ended up vomiting shortly after, and later had diarrhea for three days. So, I have to advise people with weaker stomachs: if you want to try it, you should consider whether you have a strong stomach; otherwise, you might end up food poisoned like my friend 🤢, and that would be very painful!
