Yatai is the local food culture of Fukuoka. It is definitely something you must experience when traveling to Fukuoka. Currently, about half of Japan’s yatai are in Fukuoka. Looking at the Fukuoka area, the most commonly heard of yatai are Nakashu yatai and Tenjin. Yatai and Nagahama Yatai
Because we were visiting Hakata Canal City in the evening, we stopped by Nakashu Yatai for some late-night snacks. From beginning to end, there were about 15-20 stalls.
Arriving at around 8pm on a Saturday, you need to queue up, which takes about 10 minutes. It’s pretty quick. This stall has English and Chinese menus. The clerk will help you order first, and then take your seat when the seat is ready.
Fried ramen ¥1,000
The noodle is made of thin noodles commonly used in Hakata ramen. There are two slices of pork barbecued pork, some cabbage and fungus. It tastes quite salty. I personally think it is a bit strong, so you can order it or not.
Local chicken charcoal grill ¥800
I was a little shocked when it was served. The whole chicken was roasted over charcoal fire until it turned black. The chicken was quite small. I personally felt that the charcoal smell was a bit strong and it was also salty, so I didn’t like it very much.
Hakata one-bite dumplings ¥500
There are a total of 5 fried dumplings. This one is marked "Ichiban Popular" on the menu, but I didn't expect much because it looks very ordinary, but I think it is the best among the three dishes today, even though it is stuffed inside. Not much ingredients, but the seasoning is very good
For drinks, we chose plum wine for ¥500 and lemon-style shochu for ¥600. The wine here is quite cheap, about just over NT$100, but there are also a lot of ice cubes, but it’s not bad for quenching thirst.
In the end, the clerk charged us ¥3740, and we found out that Yatai charges a 10% service fee. Although we thought it was a bit expensive, it didn't feel so heartbreaking because the experience was also rare.
Overall, considering the taste and price of this store, I can probably only give it a decent two stars.
However, Yatai culture is really worth experiencing. You don’t have to choose this store~~~ (after all, we just picked one at random😂)
