【Foodholic Nako @ Kyoto, Japan】
This shop was not originally on our list of places to eat, but we saw a long queue when we passed by, and since it was my favorite fried food and the prices were reasonable, we decided to give it a try. To our surprise, we really liked it!
This store mainly offers takeout, and its signature item is the Yuba & Cheese (fried tofu skin with cheese), along with many other fried dishes. If it weren’t for a reserved restaurant later, I would have wanted to buy one of everything!
Yuba & Cheese ¥500
There are a total of 2 pieces, wrapped in tofu skin with fish paste and cheese, then fried. The outer layer is crispy, while the filling has a chewy texture. The seasoning of the fish paste and cheese is just right, and using tofu skin as the wrapper is quite special. The taste of the tofu skin isn’t strong, so if it weren't for the name, I probably wouldn’t have realized it was tofu skin.
Octopus & Green Onion ¥450
This also comes with 2 pieces, and it has that very Japanese fried food feel. The outer layer is crispy but not made of tofu skin, so the texture is a bit different. The octopus filling isn’t small at all, but the green onion doesn’t stand out much. Still, it’s very delicious, leaving us wanting more after finishing.
However, both fried items have a slight common downside—they are quite oily, but that does not overshadow their deliciousness.
In summary, if you pass by, I recommend queuing up and giving it a try. You won't have to wait long!
